The definition of an Outsider changes to what the person thinks. In my opinion, an outsider means someone who does not fit in and is a person that not many people want to communicate with. Isolation is a state of being separation between persons or group, or a feeling being alone. There are different factors that contribute to someone feeling alone and isolated. An example of this would be when celebrities go into deep depression because they feel isolated from the whole world. They have all the material things they could ever want, but the one thing they want the most, they do not have. , which is happiness, which comes from satisfaction within oneself and being satisfied with what one has done in one's life. Feeling isolated does not necessarily mean a person is bad. Evidence in Shakespeare play Macbeth , demonstrates this quite clearly that MacBeth's isolation comes from guilt , over-ambition and greed.
In my opinion, outsiders are misunderstood and misjudged. They may just have their own opinion about something that others don't agree with. Maybe they do something that seems weird to other people. Yes, sometimes people are strange, but that isn't always the case. They are outsiders because people make them outsiders.
To begin with, when I was younger I would have considered myself an outsider because when I first started school, I didn’t have the characteristics to fit in and felt like I would not blend into the people I was surrounded by. Also, I have met many people who have presented experiences from their past when they had felt like they didn’t fit in because they couldn’t keep up the standards to be popular. Have you ever noticed those few people that are always by themselves or are alienated by others? Maybe it is because they may be poor, or how they dress, or where they are from. There are always those few people that are different, like in “The Doll’s house” how the Kelveys were alienated by their classmates due to what they wore and how they looked like. Being an outsider is universal because it happens in different places around the world. For instance, in “Sonnet, With Bird” the poem by Sherman Alexie, alienation happens all the way in England. Some might argue that it is not universal in the fact that everyone thinks differently or those who are alienated do not mind being alone and end up doing great things.

Darrel, Sodapop, and Ponyboy lost their parents recently. Now they are going through a different life, they are involved in many events. These events starting at the movie theater, then Ponyboy finding one of the Soc’s girlfriends, which leads to a fight and then even a death (Hinton). Everyone should read The Outsider because it has a great message, settings, and characters.
Empathy is the ability to be able to see things through another person's perspective and the key to seeing past stereotypes. Empathy is the true theme to “The Outsiders” because ultimately it was the resolution for the dissension faced by Pony’s family, gang and himself. In the book, the residents of the town live in a hierarchical society and are divided by their appearance, social class, and money. Their obsession with competing about appearances and class status highlighted the shallowness of their enmity towards one another. The Socs and Greaser’s mutual hostility was fueled on stereotypes and prejudice. However, there were certain characters in the book who were able to push past the labels and see the person for who they truly were on the inside and not by the amount of grease they put in their hair or they type of cars they drove. Ultimately, S.E Hinton conveyed empathy as the true theme to “The Outsiders” because it was the resolution for the dissensions faced by Ponyboy’s family, gang, and even himself.
Albert Camus states that “In our society any man who doesn’t cry at his mother’s funeral is liable to be condemned to death” (Camus, 18). In the book The Outsider, Meursault defies local convention by not showing the sadness that is expected of him at his mother’s funeral. Ultimately, his life is dependant on this very decision of whether or not to show emotion. In the society that Meursault lives in, one is expected to conform to their standards and social norms. Anyone who deviates from these norms is considered an outcast and destined to die at the hands of society. Meursault was expected to show outwards signs of grief whether it was real or not. Even if the grief is artificial, most people will play to the audience and show signs of grief to minimize the risk of losing their life. Meursault’s was conflicted between following society’s rules and being true to himself. The nurse at his mother's funeral warned him that “if yougo slowly, you risk getting sun-stroke. But if you go too fast, you perspire and then in the church you catch a chill. She was right. There was no way out” (Camus, 22). The nurse’s admonition is consistent with his internal struggle. To Meursault, walking too fast is similar to conforming to society and walking too slow means following his own path. There is no middle ground to the situation, no happy median and no suitable compromise. Meursault faces the challenge of whether or not to conform on three main levels; physical, emotional and spiritual. He has the constant battle between following his physical self; his id, and doing what is right. I think the narrator form the short story, “The Outsider,” is unreliable. He has no idea what he looks like, he’s never heard himself speak before, and he’s never even seen the outside world. I don’t think that he’s crazy, and I don’t think that he’s lying to the reader either because he’s genuinely lost, and he explains to the reader how he doesn’t know anything.
