Students Deserve Longer Lunch Hours How many minutes does it take for the body to let a person know that they are full. Unfortunately, students only getting fifteen minutes or less to eat their lunch. People who know kids know that they are always hungry. Lunch is a very important meal to have because it can help students through the rest of the day. Especially for kids who are still growing. Students should be given a longer time to eat their lunch.
Students should be given longer lunch hours because they end up eating less with less time. In the article, “ Kids Who Are Time Crunched at School Toss More and Eat Less”, it states, “ Kids who had less than twenty minutes to eat we’re consuming, across the board, less of everything.” It is not healthy to not eat lunch and if students end up eating less of it they will never be full. Also in the article is explains that is a bad thing for

On the website blog.foodserve.com, it states that, “ Rushing doesn’t give students time to recognize things like fullness or the way that certain foods make them feel”. Knowing how certain foods make students feel is important because students will know if they like the food or not. On the same website it says, “Allowing students to have some down time to relax, socialize, and stop worrying about academics is critical to their ability to focus in the afternoon – just like it is with adults.”. So, it is not good for students to rush to eat because the students focusing ability can get smaller and then students can not focus later in their classes. On another website called healthyeating.sfgate.com, it states, “Instead, feeling full is a result of your brain reacting to chemicals released when you put food or drink in your stomach. Your brain takes around 20 minutes to register these chemicals.”. How do students know they are full when they have less than twenty minutes to eat their
The basic idea behind this is eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re satisfied. Seems easy right? Well for those of us who have struggled with our relationship to food it’s not. Typically we lose touch with what it truly feels like to be hungry or satisfied because we are eating for every reason other than physical
Allowing healthier school lunches will decrease obesity in children because it will give them the proper nutrition to reduce the risk of health issues. Since obesity causes many health issues, maintaining a proper nutrition will reduce the risk of health issues. According to Star- Telegram, a daily newspaper that serves Fort Worth and areas of North Texas states, “[School lunches that have] a meal of pizza sticks, a banana, raisins and whole milk has given way to whole wheat spaghetti with meat sauce, a whole wheat roll green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, kiwi and low-fat milk … This change will help more than 2.4 million Texas students who receive a free or reduced- price school lunch to lead healthier, more active lives—in and out of the classroom”(Par. 2 and 4). School lunches are supposed to guarantee students a well balance meal, so they can have the energy to proceed with their classes throughout the day. Meanwhile, students who receive a f...
According to NPR it says that if kids get 20 minutes, they eat 35% less than kids with 25 minutes to eat. “Dedicating to little time for lunch leads to rapid eating which is not good for your health as doctor Patrick Serog told Le Figaro the French newspaper “when we eat quickly we don’t have time to feel satisfied.”
This will give us the extra push that's needed so the lunch expansion won't be a problem. You’ll still be getting your education and also being provided with more than enough time to devour your delicious lunch meals. Teachers may think this is a great idea. However, students will not want to read a book or do any assignments in this period of time. The hour of lunch should be about eating and eating only. Reading a book will not harm you what so ever. It will only make you better.
In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. Also, when children don’t get proper nutrition, they have trouble focusing on school. Most students do not buy lunch because they feel it is unappealing and do not like the food served. Many students go to other kids and ask for food. In addition, many students do not eat breakfast, so they rely on lunch to fuel them for the day.
According to the Journal of Law and Health schools that have not banned junk food have had an increase in students more excited to learn because of the sugar count unhealthy foods. Looking at the evidence regarding school lunches from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), students need equal grain and protein proportions to have a healthy daily diet, and over the course of 5 years schools that don't have a healthy lunch program have had their students overall GPA almost completely equivalent to the schools that have had the healthy lunch program. Although having tremendously unhealthy school lunches may not harm your GPA it can immensely harm your health. Lots of average students health are in danger just because of unhealthy school lunches, it is very necessary that schools realize that a healthy lunch program is always a beneficial option. Scientists have found that children who have healthier breakfast and lunch get better grades and have increased brain power. Some evidence points to unhealthy food but healthy food is always the answer in an effective school community. Sometimes unhealthy food is cheaper and tastes better but it can be very costly to your health especially as a
Lunch time is a time to take a break from the day and recharge for the rest of the day. In elementary schools it is also a time to meet up with your friends and socialize. Lunch time is not only time to eat. It is important for the mental, social, and emotional health of the children as well. Children need them chance to unwind and destress, which is promoted by socializing with friends. “Lunch should be an enjoyable part of the school day for students, offering a break from classroom work and a place to relax, socialize, and become nourished.”("The Cafeteria: Creating a Positive Mealtime Experience", 2013) Lunch time should be done in a setting where
To solve this problem, we need the cafeteria to be open more hours. If it is because of the need of workers in those other times, it is a big change that even students won't mind to work in the cafeteria to have it open for longer hours. Another idea would be to have longer hours open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Even if it is not open for the whole day, longer hours might allow more comfort ability for everyone. We know that with out food, one cannot concentrate in their studies, nor perform their work well.
School boards have dealt with complaints and issues in regards to letting their students leave school for lunch, which is their “free time” of the day. Certain teachers say the so-called "solution" of closed campus during lunch is the work of district officials who aren’t trusting students during the only time of the day that students can socialize and be free from schoolwork and lecture. If a closed campus will “eliminate” problems such as attendance rates and low budgets for lunch, the lack of freedom will create more problems like rebelling underclassmen and misconduct among the students. There aren't even any significant reasons to enforce it. It would just be a big hassle for the students, and an equal hassle for the teachers who have
We should not have longer school lunches. Longer school lunches has a great impact on everyone in school, it makes this issue worse. Students need what is best for them, which they already have. Short school lunches helps improve learning skills and lets students comprehend better. Our lunches are good as they are right now. We should not allow students to leave during school lunch.
Why is this a problem? Cafeteria food is often cheap, bought in bulk, high in calories, malnutritious, and microwaved. Student polls and opinions prove this. Therefore, this leads to a suggestion: Healthier, tastier foods and a better, more advanced lunch system should be implemented. First of all, students aren’t motivated to eat unhealthy, not-tasty food.
We should be able to eat and/or drink in class, what we want, when we want. The main reason I feel this particular way, is because there’s no reason a person should have to go eight in the morning or before until noon or after without eating or drinking something. (If you are in high school, that is). Another one of the main reasons I feel this way is because some kids have problems involving food, such as diabetes. Another possible problem might be hypoglycemia, which, in fact, I have. Hyperglycemia is another major problem in this world. I also believe that students can focus and learn more on a full stomach. Not just because I am, in fact, a student, but because I have been in the situation where I’m hungry and I can’t concentrate on anything, except my stomach and it’s cravings for food.
Many of these children only get a full meal while having their school lunch, so many of these children go hungry the rest of the day.
Through most of the testing my mind was in keeping my stomach from making any noise. I remember rushing through my test not bothering if I was reading the question correctly or filling the answer all I knew was that I wanted out before anyone can hear my stomach. And that was just a 1 hour timed test. Now imagine your child having to have to endure a whole school day on an empty stomach. Robin Marty a freelance writer, speaker and activist, wrote that when her daughter did not have enough to have lunch her concentration was “shot” and was no longer able to pay attention in class for hours.
This is why we must fight for a longer lunch hour. My friends and I are always rushing down to lunch, which takes time out of our unwinding. Then we had to run like the wind back up to the school. And running after eating isn’t a great idea. Especially, if you have a burger bar.
