Examining Perspective in 'The Things They Carried'

In “The Things They Carried” Tim O’Brien narrates a collection of short stories that is mainly told in third person. The short stories were told in third person at the beginning to allow the reader to understand the soldiers and how they felt. Throughout the different short stories we were able to each soldier’s baggage and how they were dealing with what they were going through. If the story was told in first person the whole time the reader would only be able to understand the thoughts of one individual person. Towards the end of the short stories it was switched to first person. In my opinion I thought this was significant because it allowed me to connect to the story. Tim O’Brien wanted to remember the war and all of the memories during the time he spent in war. He describes many of the people he spent time with and what they were going through while they were in war. Also, he talks about what the other soldiers carried and why it was important for them to have. Tim O’Brien wrote these short stories to show what he went through why he was in war and to also reflect on what he saw his fellow soldiers go through. The narrator Tim O’Brien writes that his fellow soldiers “carried the soldier’s greatest fear, which was the fear of blushing.” Soldiers are supposed to be strong, brave, and courageous. The soldiers do not want to show that they might be scared because that is a sign of being weak. When a solider goes into a war I believe they are afraid because they do not know what is going to happen to them or their fellow soldiers. Also, they do not know if they will ever make it home to see their loved ones again. After reading “The Things They Carried” it gave me a better sense of what people go through when they are at war.
