Berenice In the story of Berenice, she is the protagonist in the story of the same name. Poe’s narrator is Egaeus, Berenice’s cousin, to whom she is engaged to marry. As this story begins Poe has the narrator describe Berenice in comparison to himself. The reader is able to begin to visualize Berenice as a child with these lengthily comparisons. The narrator Eageus, begins by saying that although they grew up together there childhood was very different when he says, “we grew up together in my paternal halls. Yet differently we grew.” (Wordpress, 2012 p. 33) The narrator describes himself as a sick child confined indoors and Berenice as a child full of life, and unsuspecting of the illness that will eventually consume her life. The description of Berenice as a child helps the reader to understand that she is beautiful and carefree and has no idea that as a young adult she will become ill. (Wordpress, 2012) Poe does not describe Berenice to the reader with specific physical detail as he does Ligeia. However, Poe’s use of comparative descriptions between heath and sickness help to describe both Berenice and Eageus. They also set a tone that tells the reader Eagues is already captivated by, and envious of Berenice. The methods of character description in these stories are quite different. Ligeia is a beautiful smart woman that the narrator loved and describes in a positive light. She is very similar to Poe’s own mother, Eliza Poe. Rowena, the narrator’s second wife, is used as an object in the story to bring Ligeia back to him. She is seen as a substitute for Ligeia, similar to Poe’s foster mother, Frances Allan. Berenice is a beautiful woman whom Eageus loved out of consequence, she was around when he was sick, and no one else was. However, he objectified her, piece by piece, and identified her in comparison to him self. In the end, although he doesn’t appear to love her, he still tries to hold onto a beautiful memory of her when he pulls out her teeth. This appears to be similar to most of the women in Poe’s life. They were beautiful women who were around because he needed them. Each woman is an attempt to fill an existing void, such as his foster mothers attempt to fill the void of his mother. Poe’s bevy of beauties, some of whom he becomes engaged, fill the void after his first wife, Virginia Clemm died. As each of them leave him, either by death or circumstance, he desperately tries to hold on to their memory, while continuing to search for what he truly wants, which is to be part of a family
Poe’s character is clearly unwell from the beginning. The idea of the protagonist conflicting with something as mundane as an “Evil eye” suggest that the narrator may be a bit unstable, however the extent of that instability is not fleshed out until later. A lot of the hard times that he had had gone through in his life he used as motivation to write his poems and stories. For example the story “The Masque of the Red Death” is thought of to be related to the consumption (aka tuberculosis), which took the life of many of the women he loved. In “The Tell Tale Heart” the dying old man good be seen as Poe’s adoptive father on his death bed, and how the old mans eye made the murderer uncomfortable could be an analogy for how Poe’s father made him feel uncomfortable because he knew that his father did not love him.
Within the first two stanzas of Poe’s “Annabel Lee” the speaker emphasizes the fairy tale era of the speakers relationship with Annabel Lee. The writing style of Edgar Allan Poe shows the writer to be of a dark nature. In this story, he focuses on his fascination of being buried alive. He quotes, “To be buried alive is, beyond question, the most terrific of these [ghastly] extremes which has ever fallen to the lot of mere mortality.” page 58 paragraph 3. The dark nature is reflected in this quote, showing the supernatural side of Poe which is reflected in his writing and is also a characteristic of Romanticism. Poe uses much detail, as shown in this passage, “The face assumed the usual pinched and sunken outline. The lips were of the usual marble pallor. The eyes were lusterless. There was no warmth. Pulsation had ceased. For three days the body was preserved unburied, during which it had acquired a stony rigidity.” page 59 paragraph 2. The descriptive nature of this writing paints a vivid picture that intrigues the reader to use their imagination and visualize the scene presented in the text. This use of imagery ties with aspects of Romanticism because of the nature of the descriptions Poe uses. Poe possessed a very sorrowful view of the world and he expressed this throughout his literary works. His goal was to leave an impression with every detail that he included in his stories. Although Poe’s stories seem very wretched and lackluster they all convey a certain idea. A trademark of Poe’s is his use of very long complex sentences. For instance, in his work The Fall of the House of Usher, Poe tried to ensure that every detail was as relevant as possible by integrating a wide variety of emotion. Poe's life started tragically, when his father deserted his family and his mother died of tuberculosis (Bloom 1999). The death of his mother could have influenced some of his darker themes in his poems about death .He lived his childhood with a foster family who paid for his education (Bloom 1999). He went to a University for a while until he got into trouble. He had a gambling issue that latter put him into great debt; his foster father refused to pay for (Bloom 1999). On her thirteenth birthday, Francie starts to write in a journal. She begins by writing, "Today I am a woman". In just too short years, Francie grew, learned, and changed immensely. She is a completely different person than the one who existed two years earlier, both physically and mentally. Francie learned the serious and nearly devastating news that her father is a drunk, and she begins writing entries in her journal such as 'Jan 10: Papa sick today'. In her journal, Francie also wrote about her curiosity with sex. By this point in the book, Francie is no longer the girl that the reader first met, but she is now a young woman.
Edgar Allan Poe had a peculiar way with his work. He was adopted early in his life to be spared from poverty and heartache (Roberts and Zweig 226). But in the Big Read it is stated that he still felt a satisfaction from women’s suffering. Poe just wanted to be a writer and followed his passion into judging others work to support himself (Roberts and Zweig 226). Some say that he is selfish and indulgent. Sadly the death of Poe is still a mystery but his works affect people’s lives on a daily basis. The elegance of Poe’s prose invokes an emotional reaction he was subject to during his childhood that later led to the creation of the most influential works of the 19th Century.
Poe had an unstable family life. The insecure place he held at home interfered with his emotional stability. He was born as the son of actors. “The two were not notably talented; they played minor roles in third-rate theatrical companies.” (Buranalli 7) Between them they barely managed to make a living. Poe was the second of their three children. About the time the third child was born, the father died, or disappeared, and Mrs. Poe went to Richmond, Virginia with the two youngest children. The oldest child, William Henry, had been left in the care of his grandparents in Baltimore shortly after his birth. Mrs. Poe was overtaken by a fatal illness (tuberculosis). Devastated by the disease and worn out with the struggle to support her children, she died. Edgar, two years old, and the infant, Rosaline, were orphaned.
Hawthorne and Poe were great romantic writers and displayed the true conviction of knowing life and death in many different measures. It was this aspect that separated them from each other and made them completely different from each other. With all of the works between the two writers The Birthmark, The fall of the House of User, Annabelle Lee, and Rappaccini’s daughter these four would be both simultaneously the same and different. What has been said about these two writers can only be matched by the over whelming view on what their cherished more than the other. With Hawthorne was truly the gift of life, even though his wife died and his children had horrible tragedies of death due to sickness. It was the sense that Hawthorne knew he had fought for the love of his wife even though she was deathly ill and that postponed their marriage. It made him think that no matter what you have in this world you must cherish the good in it. This was evident in his stories and like Rappaccini’s daughter where the loss of the daughter truly affected the father in ways unimaginable. Even though he cherished her in a different light than others would Rappaccini looked at his frail daughter just as Hawthorne did his wife with all the love in the world. Poe was not the same though when the audience read his work. It was as if you knew there was a dark cloud that lingered over his work to portray that ultimate sense of gloom. As in Poe’s life he had tried several time s to find love and when he truly found it when he married Virginia Poe. With Poe he did not take the view of cherishing his loved ones but in fact sought the darker side of life when his wife died from the illness. Throughout Edgar Allan Poe’s life, death was a frequent visitor to those he loved around him. When Poe was only 3 years old, his loving mother died of Tuberculosis. Because Poe’s father left when he was an infant, he was now an orphan and went to live with the Allan’s. His stepmother was very affectionate towards Edgar and was a very prominent figure in his life. However, years later she also died from Tuberculosis, leaving Poe lonely and forlorn. Also, later on, when Poe was 26, he married his cousin 13-year-old Virginia, whom he adored. But, his happiness did not last long, and Virginia also died of Tuberculosis, otherwise known as the Red Death, a few years later. After Virginia’s death, Poe turned to alcohol and became isolated and reckless. Due to Edgar Allan Poe’s loss of those he cared for throughout his life, Poe’s obsession with death is evident in his works of “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Black Cat”, and “The Fall of the House of Usher”, in which in all three death is used to produce guilt.
