The bond between a grandmother and her grandchildren can be unbreakable. In the story Good Night Sleep Tight by Claire Freedman, she writes about how a grandma is trying to get her grandson to fall asleep. She uses different methods, some being new and some being old and after a short while, the grandson Archie, falls asleep. Some things that Archie wants to do are gender stereotypical, but some things are not. Although, there is no father figure in the story, the author does support gender equality. In the story, Good Night Sleep Tight the author shows that the female character and the boy character show gender equality. For example, throughout the entire book the grandmother takes care of her grandson Archie. From tucking him into bed, to giving him milk, to telling him stories. In the book, it says that, “Grandma tucked Archie into bed. She pulled the covers right up to his noise” (Freedman 19). Some may see parts of the book as examples of negative ways women are portrayed, but others may see it as being gender equality. When grandma is telling stories to Archie about his mother, it seems as if Archie’s mom is seen as being messy and naughty, but you usually see boys as being the ones to be messy rather than girls. This is seen as gender equality because it is okay for girls to get just as messy as boys do. The toys Archie plays with is also an example of how the book is gender equality because boys usually play with cars, action figures, and blocks while you usually see girls play with dolls, playhouses and kitchen sets.
