Chapter 2: Review and Analysis of ‘The Snow Child’ The Snow Child is a darker version of the famous fairy tale Snow White in which incest was shown to be the main aspect of the story. This fable of incest portrays a count’s wish to have a daughter only to abandon her from the conspicuous strategies of her ill-natured mother (Katsavos, pp. 190-213). It was represented that all the versions of Snow White are basically oedipal conflicts applicable to mother-daughter relationship thus, heightening the tension of the conflict. In patriarchal society systems, keeping up with Carter’s feminist approach was no easy task; it was not convenient for the females to submit themselves to the much-criticised tactic of Carter by beginning to reject the approaches of a male dominant society (Mulvey, pp. 14-27). However, females, in great numbers, still relate to the representation of the heroic fables as modern women’s sovereignty continues to develop in the modern world (Carter, pp. 65-70). Angela Carter adapted “The Snow Child” from a version of similar story by Grimm Brothers, wherein a father wants to have a baby girl, but not her mother. By using the situation in his interest, Carter portrays how male dominance takes place in full control and empowerment of the identity of females (McLaughlin, pp. 404-22). The Snow Child represents a child born out of desire; not only this, but the child is also a product of the physical desires of the Count (Carter, pp. 05-189). While the Count is “solely” interested in the beauty of the child, it is quite evident that all he is concerned about is the use of child as a piece of beauty, as an object that can be used for sex. While portraying such images, the writer have very strictly used the concept of male... ... middle of paper ... ...erences and biasness in the Western cultures, beliefs and counter-beliefs of the patriarchal societies and sexuality, Carter proves herself to be one of the most prominent and enlightened writers of the Western part, who remained committed to win the rightful positions for women in the society. Serving her career as a feminist author, her primary motivation behind the securing of women rights remains to revisit the traditional tales, defend the female’s position in society and based on that, derive contradictions that are indicative of how biased and indifferent the society could be, towards the female population. It is due to her works that women around the world can claim their rights and positions have been incorporated in historic literatures and cultural accounts and negative perceptions regarding their social status and suppressions have duly been dealt with.
