The Ruins of Gorlan, written by John Flanagan, takes place in the kingdom of Araluen, ruled by King Duncan. Within this kingdom, lies Redmont, one of fifty fiefs. Castle Redmont is the primary location for the bulk of the story, for this is where the majority of the characters reside. While Flanagan does not specify what time period this novel takes place in, it can be inferred that the story is in medieval times. This can be concluded by the language, government, society, location, and lack of modern technology. Common in legends and other tales during this time period, many dangerous, mythological creatures exist. While the other masters of various crafts saw no promise in Will, Halt saw his true potential not only physically, but also morally. Like any hero, Will is an honest, responsible, and respectful person. Though he is soft spoken and quite shy, he is very kind, friendly and also very curious. While Will’s tendency to get distracted and ask many questions annoy Halt, he eventually becomes very fond of him, serving as not only a mentor, but a fatherly figure as well. Always ready to follow orders and do the right thing, Will is an excellent apprentice and a likable character that keeps the audience immersed in the book.
