1. The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell features a manhunt that puts a hunter in the place of a prey. In The Most Dangerous game, Rainsford is a hunting enthusiast. The conversation with a shipmate, Whitney, reveals that Rainsford is unable to empathize the prey he is hunting and maintains that his killing is justified since the animals he is hunting have “no understanding”. When he falls overboard, he lands on an island and meets General Zaroff. Zaroff owns a great mansion on the island; he invites Rainsford in for a comfortable stay. As the men begin talking they exchange their passion for hunting. The Most Dangerous Game shows that every one is capable of good and evil and it is just a matter of perspective and The Child by Tiger exemplifies that everyone is a product of both good and evil. In The Most Dangerous game, General Zaroff is presented as a “most thoughtful and affable host”. He provides Rainsford with an imported meal, cocktails, and a room. Zaroff operates at a high level of poise and sophistication and more importantly is seen as a seemingly ‘good’ man. This however changes when he begins to allude to his hunting hobby. The only prey that appeals to him after many years of hunting is one with reason, and the only animal with reason is a human. While Rainsford view this as murder, Zaroff thinks it is progressive and rational since he is only hunting the “scum of the earth”. In fact, he is ‘benevolent’ enough to provide this ”scum” training to possibly allow them to win his game. Though most would perceive Zaroff as barbaric, he finds the notion that there is a “value of human life” as uncivilized. The Child by Tiger presents Dick as a good man. A servant for the Sheppertons, he earns the respect of the neighborhood kids by his religious fervor, army experience, and sport abilities. As the story progresses, he is subjected to ostracization at church and physical abuse by neighbors. When Dick can no longer fight his demons he snaps and shoots 6 people. Summary- A hunter of big game, Rainsford, falls over the side of his boat while smoking a cigar. He swims to a foreboding island where he finds a mansion. General Zaroff, who is the owner of the island, invites him in and offers him dinner. He is a posh man who enjoys hunting, but not the conventional type. He hunts humans, since he’s grown uninterested animals. He challenges Rainsford in his game and he accepts. In the end, Rainsford wins by outsmarting the General by jumping off the cliff, and then showing up in his bedroom and presumably kills him.
