In the Book Social Problems by Anna Leon-Guerrero, she states that a Social Problem is a condition or pattern of behavior that has a negative consequence for individuals, our social world, or our physical word” (Leon-Guerrero, A 2016, p.7). Today, Americans and people worldwide could experience a number of different kinds of social problems in one lifetime. An example is someone growing up in a home to where one parent is an alcoholic. The potential of the problem is the parent who excessively drinks to reduce stress from a long day at work and begins drinking two to three drinks a night and this could lead to more excessive drinking later on. Here he or she could be viewed by society as the lower person on the totem pole and there job description is viewed as less than someone who has earned his or hers education to become a Registered Nurse or Attorney. Even though there is a discrepancy on how one is viewed and treated equally in the real word. The functionalist perspective would support the line cooks by agreeing that people like to go out and eat and their function to society is almost equally important. “In addition, this perspective of inequality is necessary for social order and it is equally important how one recognizes and accepts one’s own status in the social structure” (Leon-Guerrero, A 2016). An example is the low-income First Generation College student is unaware of the Pell Grant, student loans and other student aid and assistance that is available to them. While the family is struggling from pay check to paycheck, to pay the monthly bills while finding ways to send his or hers son or daughter to college. This can become very discouraging for a family and the person who really wants to achieve his or hers own education may have to wait later in adulthood. According to Leon-Guerrero (2016) “The power elite is a small group of powerful business owners, political leaders and military personal who control our society.” While this elite group of people can influence how the top ten percent of high school students get the cutting edge over the average low income First Generation College Student. The high school education system is designed to developed and support the top ten percent of most high school students. These students typically receive more awareness of the resources available to them to achieve a higher education. Even though many of these students receive help from their parents, they also receive the scholarships, and advising to make their transition as smooth as possible to the four-year
