“The Wreck of the Sea-Venture,” written by Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker in their book Many Headed Hydra, tells the story of the shipwreck of the Sea-Venture en route to Virginia in 1669, which left the passengers of the ship stranded on Bermuda without a ship to continue the journey to Virginia. While the members of the Virginia Company made a boat to continue the journey, the remaining passengers of the Sea-Venture had to cooperate with one another in order to survive. The authors’ thesis in this document is the shipwreck of the Sea-Venture and the actions taken by the sailors portray the themes of early Atlantic settlement. In the 16th century, the arrival of John Cabot and later, Sir Humphrey Gilbert defined the initial attempts to colonize England, but with failing results due to a highly inhospitable environment for fisherman and their families. However, many temporary fishing settlements provide contractual work for fisherman from, differing ethnic backgrounds, such as English, French, Spanish, Basque, and of course, the Irish that dominated the fishing industry in the late 1`8th century. The major conflicts between the French (in the north and south of the island) and the British (in the east) defined the majority of fishing settlement activity, which would eventually bring small permanent settlements in the 17th and 18th centuries. Certainly, the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 marked a time in which the British were able to oust the French colonial government in Newfoundland, which set the stage for an expansive Anglophile dominance over the fishing trade. However, the fishing admiralty allowed Irish fisherman to permanently settle in the case of Thomas Nash, since the Irish were not British citizens and did not have to serve in the navy. When people think of the sinking of the Titanic, they will most likely think of the great Hollywood blockbuster movie that was more a love story then a historical movie with documentation of what happened on that cold night of April 14, 1912. Historians like to tell people what happened from the facts that are given to them, and eye witness accounts of what had happened on the ship the night it plunged to its deep dark grave. Everyone knows that the ship sank and that it is gone, but what they don't know is what had happened while people were being loaded into the lifeboats and what was occurring after the ship went down. Men played a big role in all of this; some were looked upon as cowards and others as heroes.

It once again had to go back for major repairs. Following those repairs The Shaw participated in the Invasion Of Guam. Subsequent to that in October 1944- 1945 it escorted pacific convoys to liberate Luzon and other parts of the Philippines. When the Pacific War ended the Shaw was scrapped.
