In the poem “Identity”, by Julio Noboa Polanco, the author is talking about different people and the way that they feel and in the next poem “The Road Not Taken”, by Robert Frost, it is talking about two different roads and that you have to choose which road to take. The author is putting the people in the form of flowers. The flowers are put into pots and held to where they can not be free so the author states in the poem “I’d rather be a tall, ugly weed, hanging on cliffs, like an eagle wind-waving above high, jagged rocks”, this is because he wants to free rather than held captive in a pot. Oliver’s poem essentially gives the poet an ultimatum; either he can go to the “cave behind all that / jubilation” (10-11) produced by a waterfall to “drip with despair” (14) without disturbing the world with his misery, or, instead, he can mimic the thrush who sings its poetry from a “green branch” (15) on which the “passing foil of the water” (16) gently brushes its feathers. The contrast between these two images is quite pronounced, and the intention of such description is to persuade the audience by setting their mood towards the two poets to match that of the speaker. The poem contains the central idea that many of these children never understood what home really means. In Native American culture the people venerate earth and it is referred to as mother nature which we see in the poem. The rails cut right through their home but they don’t view them like the average person. They view the tracks as if they are scars across mother earths face and her face is the Native American’s homeland. She is scarred for eternity but she is perfect in their dreams. This symbolism is ironic because the children try to reach home using the railroad that ruined natural life for them and many other Native Americans. In the second stanza the speaker says “The worn-down welts of ancient punishments lead back and fourth” (15-16). A symbol of nature utilized in both poems is a flower. In full bloom, a flower is in its most beautiful and prolific state. In youth, man is in the same state of a flower in bloom, resplendent and bountiful, but the time of beauty for a flower and youth is short. Herrrick states in lines 3-4 “And this same flower that smiles today,/ Tommorrow will be dying,';(728) which is a symbol of the shortness of youth. Frost in lines 3-4 “Her early leaf’s a flower;/ But only so an hour,';(989) also symbolizes the fleeting time of youth. In the beginning, a flower and youth are filled with vitality, but in a short amount of time the flower will wilt and die, and the youth will be an adult on a passage to death.

In the first stanza, the protagonist is merely walking in the woods when he stumbles across an alternate path. Using the first person point of view, Frost depicts a clear picture of yellow woods and a character that has a choice to make as he reaches the conflict in the story and comes across a fork in the road. As the character in the story examines the best road to travel he wishes he could take both roads. In the second stanza, the character realizes that both roads appear equal, and he will only reflect later on the decision he made as the road less traveled.
The two roads presented in this poem represent difficult decisions we are faced with in life. He uses the relationship between the paths and real life decisions throughout the whole poem. This is an example of extended metaphor, which is used to help the readers understand the analogy between the two.
