My poster contains images that I used to give a very brief imagery of Dr. Paul Farmer’s life. In the center I put a large photo of him so someone could see his full facial appearance. I put the logos for Duke University and Harvard University to show where he went for his schooling. I put Duke’ logo on blue construction paper to represent the school’s blue colors, and I put Harvard’s logo on red construction paper for the same reason. I put a quote on the bottom-right of the poster, because I feel this quote represents a general mentality of Dr. Paul Farmer. I put two pictures of Farmer treating Haitian patients, because the majority of his life’s work is treating poor people in Haiti. I put these pictures with a green background to represent the mountainous landscape in Haiti. The title, Mountains Beyond Mountains, comes from a Haitian proverb which reads “Dye mon, gen mon.” This translation roughly translates to, “Beyond mountains there are more mountains.” It can be taken into consideration in multiple ways. One could say that this means that ideas are unlimited or that when you defeat an obstacle that you can immediately began to see the next. Both are true, but I see this as an explanation for how Dr. Paul Farmer works. He doesn’t seem to settle with climbing a single mountain, for he is already looking for the next hike. I selected this picture because as soon as I walked into the Evans wing it jumped right out at me. The painting's huge size and grandeur drew my attention. I like the use of bold colors and strong details. The painting evokes an image of power with the muscled Automedon holding two giant horses.
(“Facts about mountains for kids”) This is not a solid definition of mountains, but it is a general statement. Mountains typically have steep, sloping sides and sharp peaks. (“Facts about mountains for kids”) With these sloping sides come different levels to a mountain. The lowest level are the broadleaf forests then the middle slopes that are colder and have conifer trees. The next level of tree growth is called the timberline, then there are alpine plants, and finally at the very top there is nothing but snow covered rocks. (Simon, Seymour. pg.23 ) With every different level, there comes different plant and wildlife. The elevation also determines the human population, because the higher up the mountain you go the less oxygen; therefore, you will probably feel dizzy and short of breath. Posters were used during World War II by the U.S. government to get a significant message across to their citizens. To analyze a poster it is important to think about the choice of color, placement of words and images, shapes, and emotional appeal ( Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz 91). All of these factor into the message the author is trying to explain to its viewers visually. In the poster “When You Ride Alone,” the message the author was trying to get across to Americans was the importance of carpooling. This poster successfully conveys the message through the words,color scheme and representation of objects.

The art world of photography is changing all the time. Peter Schjeldahl starts out with a very strong and well written paragraph about the world of art. Peter Schjeldahl says, “You can always tell a William Eggleston photograph. It’s the one in color that hits you in the face and leaves you confused and happy, and perhaps convinces you that you don’t understand photography nearly as well as you thought you did”. These couple of sentences are very strong and flow so well together, and they grab the reader’s attention. Peter explains how William Eggleston was known as a great American photographer.

As for the photo, it mainly uses the appeal of Pathos, but it does not lack in power. The image is simple but communicates a powerful image revolving around discrimination.
The first section is written in second person and is meant to inform the reader about Doctor Foster’s life after the 1950s. Doctor Foster is now retired from his practice in medicine and spends his time now “at the blackjack tables” (Wilkerson, 2010, p. 471) or giving medical advice to his friends and former patients over the phone. Political poster is a widely used way of publicity, as can be seen from the posters of the Nazi propaganda connotations for worship leaders and policy. There are three main characteristics of posters.
The drive to cross the Kentucky border had taken hours and hours of strenuous patience to finally arrive in another state. The view was by far country like as hints of cow manure could be smelled far from a distance. We drive through small towns, half the size of our hometown of Glen Ellyn had been the biggest town we've seen if not smaller. The scenery had overwhelmed us, as lumps of Earth from a great distance turned to perfectly molded hills, but as we got closer and closer to our destination the hills no longer were hills anymore, instead the hills had transformed to massive mountains of various sizes. These mountains surrounded our every view as if we had sunken into a great big deep hole of green pastures. Our path of direction was seen, as the trails of our road that had followed for numerous hours ended up winding up the mountainous mountains in a corkscrew dizzy-like matter.

Keith Haring’s poster of Ignorance=Fear, Silence=Death has a series of three yellow colored people in several different positions. The figures are non-representational because we do not see anything that truly defines the gender, age, or possibly even race of these people. The first yellow colored figure has their hands covering to what appears to be their eyes, and has a pink x over their stomach. A series of black lines surround the figure. Some of these lines are straight and others curve around the figure’s body. The second figure is covering the sides of their head. Once again a pink x mark is covering their stomach, and there are black curved and straight lines surrounding the body. Finally, the last figure we see is covering the bottom
Both of these pictures are the same painting, yet different feelings are provoked by each. To me the one on the left, the colorful one, is more intriguing. It jumps at you grabbing your attention and drawing your eye in, giving you a warm and lively feeling. The picture to the right seems a bit dull and emotionless, portraying a melancholy feeling. In the art world color is a good thing. It brings other elements to a picture that you can't receive by using only two colors. Color can represent many things, emotions, mood, importance, a specific object, or as we have come to know the word, people. People seem to be assigned a color that people think represents the type of person they are. Yet, unlike the art world where a color is usually linked to only one trait or emotion, like, black-sadness, white-purity, red-evil, purple-royalty, the colors that we assign each other do not have set traits that are encompassed with in each color. The only thing that is set with the categories of colors we describe each other with is the tone of our skin! The color of ones skin played a big role in the years between the late 1950's and early 1960's and defined the lines of desegregation, in the midst of this racial cacaos lied innocent children and how the case of Central High changed their rights to an education.

"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
