All people have many different personalities. Some of these different personalities come out when a person is under the influence of alcohol. This idea can be seen in Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt. In the story, Frank’s family is living in Ireland and they are very much in poverty. Frank’s family works so hard to try and better themselves, but they just can not get out of poverty. Frank’s father, Malachy Sr., does not do anything to help them out either. Malachy Sr. can not keep a job and when he does have a job he takes all his earnings to the pub to drink them away. has is religion. Malachy Sr. is a devoted Catholic, and he tries to inscribe his children with his Catholic beliefs and teachings. For example, Frank says, “Dad makes us say grace before meals and grace after meals and he tells us be good boys at school because God is watching every move and the slightest disobedience will send us straight to hell where we’ll never have to worry about the cold again” (McCourt 117). This shows that Frank’s dad believes strongly in his religion and he wants his children to be strong in their faith too. He is very straight forward with his teachings, but this is the best way he knows how to teach them and he is teaching them because he loves and cares for them. Another example that Malachy Sr. is trying to teach Frank to become a good Catholic is when he tries to get Frank to become an altar boy. Frank says, “He knocks at the sacristy door and tells Stephen Carey, This is my son, Frank, who knows the Latin and is ready to be an altar boy” (McCourt 184). This shows the real determination of Malachy Sr. and the importance of Catholicism to him. He teaches Frank all these Catholic rules so that Frank can become an altar boy.
