In the epistolary novellas “Address Unknown” by Katherine Kressman Taylor, and “Flowers of Algernon” by Daniel Keyes; the authors use first point of view to highlight the central theme. Additionally, the concept of naivety is the central theme of both stories. Initially, both main characters, Max and Charlie present themselves childlike, which makes them blind and ingenuous. The story, “Address Unknown”, by Katherine Kressman, describes the relationship between Max and Martin through first point of view to highlight his central theme. Originally, Max and Martin were in positive business terms towards each other, and while Martin moves back to Germany their companionship gradually drifts apart. Max, a Jew ceaselessly journalizes a friendly and gracious letter to Martin in Germany, while Martin openly betrays him. Martin joins and completely sides with Hitler and he allows Nazi’s to murder, Max’s sister, Griselle; “Poor little Griselle. In Taylor’s story, Max and Martin were great business friends, and while Martin moves to Germany Max sent letters to keep in touch; “My Dear Martin: Back in Germany! How I envy you!”. Meanwhile, Martin betrays Max by allowing for his sister to die the Nazis. This proves Max’s naivety for thinking that Martin is his best friend. In the end, Max wakes up and smell’s the cup of coffee; consequently, he murders Martin by sending excessive letters to Germany. Additionally, in Keyes story, it states “It’s a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked to have me around all the time to make fun of me”. Charlie thought he had top friends until he became smart and realized that his friends were mocking him behind his back.
