Summary This paper analyzes a product launch for the United Soccer League (USL). The product launch is a promotion and relegation system, which would be installed by the USL expanding by launching a division three professional soccer league. The USL currently already has a league at the division two level. There are several important factors involved with this product launch. The professional soccer environment in the United States is difficult to navigate, and it’s important that USL doesn’t lose its position in the US Soccer pyramid. In addition, with the expansion, it is important that the new league and new teams understand what factors make franchises stable financially at the lower levels. The USL also has an opportunity with its product launch to bring a new concept to professional soccer in America with promotion and relegation. This is a system that can only be achieved with multiple leagues working together, and with the USL launching a second league, they could be the first professional soccer entity in the United States to have promotion and relegation, which is used in every European country in regards to soccer. The NASL had a unique structure with no salary cap and very small fees for expansion teams, which meant growth with new teams was relatively easier than most leagues and if owners wanted to spend, they could attract players financially without any limits. The league aggressively went after attracting stars that weren’t just second tier players as well. Real Madrid legend Raúl, Barclays Premier League veteran Joe Cole, Niko Kranjčar, and Georgios Samaras are just some of the names that played in the NASL between 2012 and 2015.
