Summary: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

The two theories I chose for the case analysis are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and solution focused therapy (SFBT). Cognitive behavioral therapy is a combination of several therapies that include dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, rational emotive behavior therapy, and behavior therapy (Jordan, Froerer, and Bavelas, 2013, p.47). CBT is utilized for individuals who have problematic behaviors and distorted thinking. Clinicians who utilize this therapeutic approach challenge the individual’s faulty thinking and acts as if they are the expert. CBT mapping helps identify indirect pathways medicated by, moods, physical reactions, and thoughts (Giarratano and Books, 2004, p.458). Role playing can assist by acting out the problem behaviors and responding to faulty thoughts or how they believe others would respond to their behaviors or thoughts. Rational emotive imagery will assist the individual in imagining themselves feeling, behaving, and thinking how they would like to in real life. Dignity and worth of a person is used to guide social workers in helping the individual find or bring out their positive content and strengths so that the individual is able to address their needs instead of focusing on their weaknesses or problems. CBT fits well with the value of importance of human relationships because this value sees relationships between others as the source of change. With CBT clinicians are working to assist the client by diminishing their problems and faulty thinking which can strengthen the person and their ability to maintain, promote, restore, and enhance the well being of social groups, families, communities, organizations, and individuals. Overall CBT and SFBT are congruent with the NASW code of ethics because the code of ethics guide social workers on how to use conceptual framework in respect to helping individuals address their problems, identify solutions, while also treating individuals as
