What makes a civilization different from others? There is many ways a civilization can differ from others. They can be different in culture, geography, religion government, society, etc. Geography, religion, and kings are the things that Sumer and Egypt contrast. The main differences between Sumerian and Egyptian geography is the flooding of the rivers and invasions they suffered. Sumer was a Mesopotamia, a land between two rivers. The two rivers were the Tigris and Euphrates River. Egypt had only one river, the Nile River. It was usual to rivers flood; the Tigris and Euphrates had very unpredictable flooding. Different from these rivers the Nile was very much predictable. Flooding in Sumer caused a lot of death, so people would start building their houses further from the rivers and they would also build irrigation ditches. Sumer’s most known king is Hammurabi. He created this laws that everyone had to obey or else there would be consequences. Hammurabi’s code was “An eye for eye, and a tooth for a tooth”, this meant if you killed someone you should out to death. In Egypt kings would be called Pharaoh. Pharaohs would rule as gods, people thought that he would cause the sun to rise and the rivers to flood. Sumerians and Egyptians can be different in many ways; they can be different in geography, religion, and kings. What similarities and differences did Egypt and Mesopotamia have and why was Egypt more politically unified than its neighbor, Mesopotamia? I think in order to answer these questions it is important to look at how both societies lived. Egypt and Mesopotamia were two civilizations existing during the time period of 2000-1200 BCE.(text, 97) These civilizations were shaped by their environment, involved with trade, and faced changes in government after the 100 year drought; however, they differed in that Egypt was shaped by the Nile, traded goods for goods and changed their outlook on the pharaoh who was ruler of all; whereas, Mesopotamia was shaped by the Tigris and Euphrates, traded money for goods, and had a ruler over rulers. The governed harmonic life style of Egypt led this society to be more politically unified; whereas, Mesopotamia’s government led to many different ways of structure, thus creating a less unified society.
Around 3500 B.C.E to 3000 B.C.E., civilizations emerged in many places. Egypt and Mesoamerica are distinctive two of them. Egypt is situated in the Nile valley in the north east of Africa. Ancient Egypt included two regions a southern region, and northern region. The southern region is called Upper Egypt, and the northern region was called Lower Egypt. The life around Ancient Egypt centers on the Nile River and the fertile land around the banks of the river. Farmers created an irrigation system to control the water flow, so the crops can grow in both the rainy and dry seasons. This irrigation system made a surplus in crops.
Many civilizations have similar qualities as other civilizations, but they also have their differences. Some of these differences include: Religion, Geography, and Government. The Egyptian and Mesopotamian religion and society were similar, but their government/leadership was different. Religion in Egypt and Mesopotamia were very similar because both faiths were polytheistic and had priestly authority. Both cultures had powerful priests, both had a belief of an afterlife, and religion was part of their daily lives. Both societies had similar rigid social classes, relied on slavery; both also had a religion which played an important role in their daily lives. Although, their societies were very common, they still had some differences in government. The Egypt, the government was a theocracy, whereas the government in Mesopotamia was run by a monarchy. Despite their similarities, the differences between these two civilizations were most likely a result of unique geographical and topographical conditions.
Of the first civilizations, Mesopotamia and Egypt left behind the most widely available documented look at the past (92). The two have some similarities and differences about the afterlife in which whether they come back as another person, or they come back as another soul, or they go to another world. The Mesopotamian geography affected their society because Mesopotamia was located on an open plain without protection from foreign intrusions. Egypt, on the other hand, was centered on the Nile River ad protected by natural boundaries. This allowed Egypt?s kingdom for prosper and last for thousands of years. Mesopotamia was not considered a nation or country, it was considered a region between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers that established a number of highly organized city-states. Since each city-state was independent there was no capital of Mesopotamia.
These civilizations present many resemblances that were once part of the foundations of their society. Although both of these civilizations were at one point enemies of one another, they had similar correlations that shaped and formed their cultures and societies. The main difference between these two civilizations is religion. Without its differences, each civilization had governed its people in manners that it could not be differentiated among each other. Overall, these civilizations presented different methods of leading a civilization and still had similarities among one another.
The Sumerians were the most incredible people who ever lived on the face of the earth. They created civilization when most of the rest of the world was still living in the Stone Age. The Sumerian civilization was already ancient when it ended in 2004 B.C., twenty centuries before Julius Caesar, sixteen centuries before Socrates, and seven centuries before Tutankhamen. The Egyptians were the only people with a civilization comparable to the Sumerians. There is no mention of the Egyptians in the Sumerian archives and there is no direct evidence that they had a noticeable influence on one another, except for their ability to build giant pyramids.
