This chapter began reviewing the point that alcohol and other drugs has impact on all the family members and the evidence showed that many problems occur among children of addicted family. Although some people believe that dysfunction in the family drives family members to abuse alcohol and other drugs, others see alcohol and other drugs problems the main reason that lead to family problems.
Children’s exposure to alcohol and other drugs were also discussed in this chapter. This section, provided a comprehensive explanation with statistics about the possible effects of fetal exposure to AOD. As stated, Child maltreatment include physical, sexual, psychological abuse, neglect, and exposure to family violence. Maltreatment impacts on children development and academic performance. Also, Evidence showed the consequences of child maltreatment include, psychological and emotional disorders, higher risk of substance use, eating disorders, and suicide attempts. Ethics code, school counselor advocacy role, and empowering children and family are important issue that also discussed in this article. They should take steps to be certain if the pupils under the influence or not before referring them to the appropriate treatment program. I liked how these steps was explained very clearly and I think this document is very important to know before doing practicum or internship.
5- NJ School Substance Abuse Legislation
This legalization indicates that there are increasing number in abusing alcohol and other drugs among young people. Also, children of alcoholic parents are at higher risk of developing alcohol and other drugs disturbances. School-based programs have proved to be effective for those who are at high risk of substance use. I found it is really helpful to know the difference between substance and substance abuse. Additionally, this document mentioned policies for evaluations and referral which are also helpful.
