To the Department of Communication Disorders,
I am writing to request an appeal concerning a couple of the department’s policies, which I have already violated prior to my enrollment at the University of Houston. The first policy I am addressing states that a student must earn at least a B- in all pre-COMD courses. The second policy I would like to petition states that a student may earn no more than one grade below a B- in COMD courses. I have violated this policy at my former university (where such policy was not in place) by obtaining a C grade in Anatomy and Speech Science. I hope to be able to have the opportunity to retake these courses at the University of Houston in order to receive a higher grade and be accepted into the COMD program. …show more content…

However, there were several factors that impacted my academic standing. While attending my sophomore year at St. Xavier University in Chicago (my hometown) I lived with my grandparents, who are not in their best state of health. Living with my grandparents frequently distracted me from my studies because of the amount of care and attention they needed. I was not always able to take advantage of the luxuries available to most traditional college students such as, conveniently staying on campus, studying late at the library, and studying with groups. I often found it extremely hard to focus on my schoolwork while at home, which is one of the main reasons I have decided to transfer. Throughout the school year I dealt with several overwhelming incidents of stress causing me to have to see an on campus counselor for anxiety and depression. My counselor helped me manage my stress and wealth, such as my schoolwork, taking care of my grandparents, presiding a student organization, and working as a substitute daycare
