If you could take a pill to make more money at your job, would you? While people take part in sports for a variety of reasons, for most enthusiasts, sports provide entertainment.
The use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) by professional athletes has been acknowledged as a problem since at least the 1960s. We, as paying consumers, who are buying the product that sports are selling, deserve to watch the best athletes that science and training can provide. Performance Enhancing Drugs and sports don’t mix. “The main arguments against the usage of PEDs in sports are that they are harmful and potentially deadly, and that athletes who use them gain an unfair advantage, violate the spirit of competition, and send the wrong message to children” (ProCon). Athletes who choose not to use PEDs are put at an unfair advantage: most will be unable to compete at the same level as athletes who are using PEDs. It would be much more difficult for a naturally gifted athlete to stand out amongst steroid infested competition; and as a result, they themselves will be pressured into using PEDs just to level the playing field. This will put these athletes in an unneeded ethical conundrum that can be easily avoided. The sports puritans will also argue that the integrity of the game will be compromised because it is no longer about which athlete has the best skills or God given talent; instead it will be about which athlete has the most money to buy the best performance enhancing drug.
