Since the 1960’s many professional and olympic athletes have made headlines for scandals tied to the abuse of performance enhancing drugs, otherwise known as PED’s. The abuse and scandals involving athletes and PEDs continue to rock social media, the news, and newspapers globally. Performance enhancing drugs, such as anabolic agents, peptide hormones, and stimulants allow athletes to train harder and faster in a much shorter period of time. A diverse group of athletes, in all kinds of sports are taking these drugs to amplify their performance and obliviate their competition. Performance enhancing drugs should not be allowed in sports because it can adversely hurt the athlete both physically and physiologically, professional and olympic athletes could influence the young up and coming athlete to follow in their footsteps, and it is unfair to allow athletes to have inequitable …show more content…

Performance enhancing drugs are very unhealthy for athletes that are abusing them because anabolic agents such as steroids can cause an overgrowth of muscles and potentially cause them to tear. According to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), PED’s such as peptide hormones, growth factors, anabolic agents (including testosterone), and related substances can cause an array of physical and physiological side effects such as, but not limited to, liver damage, increased aggressiveness, impotence, roid rage, abnormal menstrual cycles, hypertension, blood cancers, anemia, strokes, heart issues, diabetes and arthritis. As stated on the USADA website, “PEDs have the ability or potential to drastically alter the human body and biological functions, including the ability to considerably improve athletic performance in certain instances,”
