Professional athletes found to be using performance-enhancing drugs should be banned from their sports and should be informed on how it not only affects them but also their teammates. “Although performance enhancing is an old-age practice, the use of steroids and other drugs during competition is a violation of good sportsmanship. Steroid use provides an unfair advantage to athletes and establishes unrealistic achievement levels, which is why athletes who have used steroids should be punished rather than honored” (Issitt). Anabolic steroids have side effects ranging from physical appearance to internal effects. Some physical effects of steroids are ¨acne, breast development in men, oily skin, hair loss, mood swings, fatigue, trouble sleeping, and decreased appetite¨ (Anabolic Steroid). Those are just a few of several short-term effects. Long-term effects are ¨ liver disease, malfunctions of kidneys, paranoia, high blood pressure, injuries to tendons, stunted bone growth, high blood cholesterol¨ (Steroids). Anabolic steroids are drugs that athletes consume them in hope of gaining weight, strength, power, speed endurance, and aggressiveness. They are widely used in athletes who play in sports like track and field, weight lifting, football, and baseball. Women who take steroids also have a list of effects which include a deeper voice, increased body hair, and baldness. Sometimes, athletes who use anabolic steroids may share the needles, syringes, or other equipment they use to inject these drugs. By sharing needles, syringes and other equipment, a person becomes a high risk for HIV transmission. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. If a person shares needles, syringes and other equipment to inject steroids into the vein, in the muscles or under the skin, small amounts of blood from the person infected with HIV may be injected into the bloodstream in the next person …show more content…

Anabolic steroids such as Testosterone-Enanthate and Dianabol are the most common steroids of all time, and are both extremely cheap. While the demand for these steroids is high, their availability is guaranteed. Then there are steroids such as Anavar, which has a much smaller supply therefore it is much more expensive. These steroids range from one to two dollars per mg tab to eight to twelve dollars per tab. Imagine being addicted to these and needing them constantly. On top of that, ruining your body. The more you take, the more harm you do which could lead you to the hospital with surgery or the doctor which results in medical bills that cost a fortune. Before you think about even starting the drug think about how it will affect you and your life. As stated, steroids can cause severe depression. There was a case where this was proven. A baseball athlete by the name of Taylor Hooton, Taylor was a reliable pitcher and was very popular because of his talent and had killed himself due to depression from the steroids. Because he had taken the steroids it caused severe depression to the point he killed himself, which led his family and friends to be torn up from his loss.
