Most people visualize sorority girls as snobby, disciplined, and intelligent. This image of them is frequently seen in movies and television shows. My friend Lisa is much friendlier and barely gets involve in house activities or conforms to their regulations. Snobbery is simply one aspect of the sorority girl image they accomplish this task by interacting with a selective crowd. Which consists of girls from the house, fraternity boys, and possibly family. The frat boys serve as potential dates; usually there is a variety of dates to chose from. Another aspect of the sorority girl stereotype is strict conformity to house rules, drinking and smoking are strictly prohibited; making the girls seem so disciplined and innocent. However, there’s nothing Lisa likes more then to stay out late at a good party and completely blow off curfews. As a matter of fact, Lisa refuses to go to these boring parties; and pretend she is having fun. She'd rather forget the party and go out with other friends even if she knew she will get in trouble. While reading Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities, I learned more about the inner workings of Greek Life. I learned that the odds of me finding a sorority are so slim due to my independent and different personality. While I am not good at sticking up for myself, something this book has made me feel is crucial to blend in and conform to an ideal to fit into a sorority, I am too opinionated. There are not many sororities (at least shown in Pledged) that welcome girls who are different, preferring to stay similar. While I was a student in middle and high school, the lovely women of Delta Sigma Theta seemed intangible to me. I admired them and wanted to one day follow in their footsteps. The way they spoke, how they carried themselves, the respect they demanded and the attention they received just by walking into a room was mind boggling to me. The large number of sororities and fraternities around campus create a large party environment. Frat parties can get extremely rowdy and a number of them have to be shut down by local police. Obviously, the police being involved to shut something down is never a good thing and is clearly a sign of negativity for the overall atmosphere of any campus. Plus, the constant partying that goes on weekend after weekend really cuts down on the amount of time students spend studying. The excessive partying also takes away the significance of the education that is provided by universities, which is seen as a huge negative impact for universities and students. This argument is completely disputable! As stated earlier, Greek students have higher graduation rates and higher accumulative grade point averages than students who are not a part of Greek organizations. If Greek students can throw parties and continue to achieve admirable grade point averages, why can’t non-Greek students? I was unaware that every time I have a good time at a university, it would be taking away the significance of my education, that notion is honestly illogical and shouldn’t even be considered as problem caused by Greek organizations. This issue seems to be a non-Greek student problem that is being pushed onto Greek organizations. Hi Kaitlyn! I am involved in Greek life as well, so I can relate to this! I agree that a huge strength within a sorority are those members who are truly dedicated to their chapter, especially the board members, they are the ones who keep the organization running smoothly (most of the time). A major weakness for a sorority could also be those members who are not as dedicate. I feel like every sorority and fraternity have those members who only care about the social status, and it seems like those are the ones that constantly break the rules and ruin their reputation and put the entire chapter in danger of being put on probation or even kicked off campus. An obvious opportunity for any sorority is kicking out those members who do break the rules

Hazing is humiliation during activities in which fraternities and sororities put you through to becoming a member. It is their way of seeing how prepared you are to be initiated into the group. Although this does not happen at FIU because it is forbidden, many schools throughout the United States haze associate members.

On April 21, I witness one of the biggest and funniest event of the year, The AGD Lip Sync contest. All of Greek Life and other club on campus were there to witness a competition to see who could mock and make the best performance for their favorite artist. My fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi was there, lip signing to R&B greatest idols, Usher. Others mocked artist such as Justin Bieber, Fergie, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, The Spice Girls, and One Direction. Started with stating who was in the competition and started off with the winner of last year competition Kappa Sigma. The main goal was for each team to make a great choreographed dance and while at the same time lip singing the song. Much as the show Lip Sync Battle. All team had such great performances, seeing as if they practiced for months on end, but in the end the team who won again was Kappa Sigma, who sang the lyrics of Kanye West.
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. In this film we see many typical high school behaviors such as cliques, cattiness, and popularity (or lack there of) issues. Many scenes in this movie have an array of stereotypes. Sometimes they are clearly stated and others just seen through attitudes of the actors/actresses character. Also through out we follow the main clique “the plastics” and they have this image they have to uphold. Academic Performance *Fraternities and sororities also have a negative effect when it comes to a member's academic standing. College fraternities and sororities are known to be the way for the underage students to drink alcoholic drinks. They can drink at fraternity parties as long as they are part of the group or association. The party usually hosted at fraternity housing. Fraternities and sororities promote illegal drinking since they give access for the underage students to alcohol. It often leads to bad happenings like hospitalizations for alcohol poisoning or alcohol-induced injuries.(Eastman; 2002) While some fraternities try to keep underage students out of their parties, many don't check ID's and will allow even high school students to attend -- especially underage girls. Fraternity and sorority parties have more cases of heavy drinking than any other off-campus parties or bars in college. According to the Harvard School of Public Health's College Alcohol Study, 32% of the students who drink had attended a fraternity or sorority party during the year, and 13% of the students who attended these parties had at least five drinks in one sitting. According to the National Criminal Justice Reference Service, fraternities and sororities are more likely to suffer alcohol-related consequences than non-Greek students because they drink more.
