Ever hear someone passing judgement on another person just because of that person's race, occupation, hobby, or appearance with no basis to support those claims? In most cases than not these people are being either stereotyped or misconceptualized. Although not all stereotypes and misconceptions are negative. Stereotypes are widely believed mental pictures of groups of people, which may also be true but slightly exaggerated. Misconceptions on the other hand, are views that are incorrect based on untruths. These stereotypes are created to categorize groups of people. While misconceptions are formed from having stereotypes. People on plant based diets have several stereotypes surrounding them. For instance, in many cases, people on plant based diets and vegans are thought to be one and the same. This is quite the contrary. A person on a plant based diet being someone with a diet consisting of only vegetables, fruits, legumes, seeds, grains, nuts, and zero animal products. A vegan focuses primarily on the ethics of not only one’s dietary choices, in other words the consumption of animals and animal byproducts, but also the usage of such products. Many believe that the people on plant based diets are eating only whole plant foods, with meals consisting of only salads. The opposite is actually true, people on plant based diet may still cook, although it should be minimal. People on plant based diets also avoid refined and processed foods, alcohol, and caffeine. However, these are just a set of guidelines for people on plant based diets to live healthier lives and don't necessarily have to be followed. In a personal interview conducted by Hana Zuhair with Bassem Youssef, Egypt’s most renowned political satirist and former surgeon, on his plant based diet, explains, “I mean, yes I’m vegan in the sense that I don’t eat anything that comes from animals or animal products. However, there are vegans who do that too but still maintain an unhealthy diet. They eat processed foods, chips, fried foods, fake meat and lots and lots of sugar. I would prefer the term ‘Plant-based whole foods diet’. This is much more accurate and much healthier.
