Worldwide, stereotypes against women has emanated in our society, as well as, in the mainstream media. According to Sarnavka “misrepresentations, distorted reflections, sexism and silencing of women's voices are all examples of mistreatment against women in the media” (Sarnavka 91). In today’s U.S culture, women are expected to be beautiful, and part of being beautiful is being thin. Therefore, the media presents perception of beauty for women that is often unattainable. One organization that exists to address such misrepresentation of women in mainstream media is the AWID Form. The Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) is a feminist organization that works to bring gender equality in the media. The AWID Forum incorporated a workshop, Master Tools, which presents stereotypes of “maleness” and femaleness” that’s usually being depicted in the mainstream media (Sarnavka 91). These two organizations empower women and allow gender equality for women in the media. The PfA benefits from governmental support to tackle gender stereotypes in public and private life. For instance, the PfA requires women to actively participate in media platforms so that they can implement decisions in regards to how women should be portrayed in the media. Contrary, the AWID works to better educate women on how the media misrepresents them so that they can understand their own self worth. For instance, women participating in the AWID are less likely to have unrealistic ideals, such as, “thin is beautiful”. I acknowledge that the media, till this day, is still exploiting women, however, I believe that if we have more active interventions to prevent media misrepresentation of women, then inevitably we will see less exploitation of women in the media.
