I am currently a ABA therapist and I've been working in this field for two years. I have worked with children from ages 2 to 14 years old with different diagnoses. Most of my clients are autistic but I've worked with children with Down syndrome, ADD, ADHD, ODD, OCD, and developmental delay. I have opportunities to reinforce positive behaviors and help extinguish negative behaviors. I also am able to engage in incidental teachings, run knowledge based programs, and interactions using verbal and non verbal communication. My career plan is to become certified as a BCBA and become a BSC. As a BSC I will be able to help many more children on a high scale.
Indira graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a Masters in Special Education in 2003. She works with mentally challenged youth to help them gain the skills necessary for a better life. She told me that children with disorders such as schizophrenia and autism never gain proper skills to lead their lives on their own, but they are very social and they know how to draw, play and communicate with other kids their age, the basic skills of a child. Children with disorders like ADHD and Bipolarity Disorder come to Frest School to learn how to cope with the disorder and lead a normal everyday life.
While growing up I had many ideas of what professional career I wanted to obtain, although until recent years, occupational therapy was not even a thought. It was not until my grandmother had a stroke that I even knew what occupational therapy was or entailed. I watched my grandmother participate in therapy leading her to learn how to tie her shoes again, and the things I thought were so simple as to dress herself again. It was during that time as high school graduation was approaching that I realized I wanted to be apart of that. I wanted to have a role helping others learn and exceed as she did because I seen how much joy it brought her. This experience opened my eye to the things we so often take for granted, that some people lose the ability of doing or lack the ability of doing. Rayhena Karim: I am a Registered Nurse with fifteen years of experience in Acute Rehabilitation. I completed an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing in 1999 from Rio Hondo Community College. Nursing in today’s healthcare system is challenging because of rapid technological advance and changes in healthcare policies. There is a high demand for professionally educated nurses to meet the needs of a more complex and changing health care system. My desire to pursue a bachelor degree in nursing to enhance my nursing education. After four semester of perusing a degree in the engineering field, I came to a realization that this is not a career that I was truly passionate about. It lacked the personal connection that I want in a lifelong career. My high school interest and fondness of anatomy and physical fitness led me to the tract of Kinesiology, and soon to the path of becoming a physical therapist. Physical Therapy is an occupation that allows me to work one on one with someone, and create a bond that is rarely ever formed in any other occupation. I moved to the united states of America on February 14 2002, I came here to start afresh and begin a new life of opportunity, I must admit I never knew what to really expect other than what I've seen on television as such, it was a dream come through for me. While I know I desire a career as a BCBA, I am aware of the option to become a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA). I am also aware of various organizations that utilize BCBAs. For instance, The Scott Center for Autism Treatment on the Florida Tech campus is an ideal option to combine both in-class and hands-on experience in the field of ABA. Other local options that provide treatment include Kaleidoscope Interventions and its affiliated Puzzle Box Academy. In closing, my time in the kindergarten autistic support room has opened my eyes to say the least. I have a greater understanding and respect for these children and teachers. I have seen many teachers and aids with my work as a case manager but I have not seen a better teacher as Mrs. F. I was fortunate and lucky to work with such an experienced professional in the field to help lay my foundation for my future role as a school psychologist.
Two years ago, I embarked on a journey that would teach me more than I had ever imagined. As a recent college graduate, I was thrilled to finally begin my teaching career in a field I have always held close to my heart. My first two years as a special education teacher presented countless challenges, however, it also brought me great fulfillment and deepened my passion for teaching students with special needs. The experiences I have had both before and after this pivotal point in my life have undoubtedly influenced my desire to further my career in the field of special education.
Child Psychologists - I am very interested in the field of child psychologist, mainly because so many doctors, parents, and school officials only desire that children behave rather than wondering what is making them behave this way. I would love the opportunity to use my knowledge from health psychology, and other complimenting classes to help determine the reasoning behind behavior issues, social ineptness, and emotional needs that children with and without special circumstances deal with on a daily basis. I realize that in order to perform this type of job I have several more years of hard work and dedication ahead. However, I feel that the need is present and in our fast-paced world, it appears to be growing rather than leveling out.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that effects the brains development. It is characterized by affecting communication, cognition and social interaction. The spectrum of the disorders ranges from a mild condition called Asperger’s syndrome to a more severe form, which severely impairer’s development. The Office of Communications and Public Liaison states that the disorder affects one and eighty-eight children, however ASD effects boys more frequently than girls (Office of Communications and Public Liaison, 2013). ASD emerges in all age, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. The significant varied character and severity of the disorder is why ASD is considered a spectrum that poses a broad range of symptoms.
This interest combined with the events in sixth grade led me in the direction of working with special needs children. I looked into becoming a special education teacher or even a biomedical engineer, but these careers only encompassed a few of my interests, and there were several aspects I disliked about them.
My current job requires me to assist a Physical Therapist in the treatment of children with developmental disorders. Currently, my title is physical therapist assistant with computer background. Working as a PTA does encompass mostly supporting and assisting role, however, more training and degree is required to be considered the primary decision maker as far as therapy treatment and evaluating patients is concerned. Occasionally, I do provide assistance to patients without the supervision of a Physical Therapist. In five to ten years, I plan to obtain my Bachelor’s degree in health care. Upon completion, to work as an Early Intervention Specialist (EIS) and design a system that will benefit children who needs advance therapy however, cannot afford the cost of treatment. Professional, I will be working as an EIS, while taking additional training and classes towards achieving my ultimate 10 years plan to become a Licensed Physical therapist with several practices
Currently, I work at the Foster Knox Day Care here at UCM. Being a Social Work major has enhanced my love of helping children. After taking Human Behavior, I can cue in what is going on in the developmental stage of the child life. Now I understand that a two-year may not say No to be defiant. Being able to interact with children has made me more aware that I want to work with children as a social worker.
I started working with children, adolescents, and their family when I was fourteen-years-old. My first experience volunteering was teaching basic daily skills to toddlers and young children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I can say with confidence that that was a time where my passion and to better the lives of children and their families became a noteworthy interest of mine. When working with children who are diagnosed with ASD, as well as other neurodevelopmental disorders, it requires patience and genuine warmth to connect on a level that would benefit the children. I learned about my strengths and weaknesses and how my personality distinguishes me from others.
My goal is to work in a mental health setting as soon as I graduate with my BSW. I would like to see if I should get my masters in social work or get my doctorate in psychology. Either way, I feel like I will be doing a great thing. As a professional, I want to help many people with their problems.
