The State Hermitage Museum is recognised as one of the world’s oldest art museum and boasts a wide collection of Dutch and Flemish artist, staying true to the founder’s, Catherine the Great, love of these types of artworks. The State Hermitage Museum has similar floor plan to that of the Smithsonian where it consists of several building that also double as buildings that are integral to the identity of Russia. It will be looking through the history of the museum, the purpose of it creation and the events that it has withstood that we can see that the development of technologies and the preservation of the museum being vital to creating a value museum experience. During the First World War, the winter palace transformed itself into a mobile hospital unit for injured soldiers. Many of the great halls and rooms were lined with hospital beds to accommodate the masses; however the dining room kept its function. This was for the staff and the able bodied men to eat like a regular man would outside of war and to being a boosted moral having been taken care of in the Winter Palace. During the First World War, the collection housed in the winter palace was transported to Moscow for safe keeping under the orders of the museum director at the time. It was not until 1921 that the collection returned to St Petersburg, due to the civil war that took place
