Organizing. According to Hill, Jones & Shilling (2015, p. 397), organizational structure is an important factor when attempting to gain a competitive advantage. Currently, Staples is not in the best competitive position. Therefore, it has been hard to maintain employees and for employees to stay focused and motivated in their day to day responsibilities. Staples has a functional organizational structure and ordinarily this should be a strength of an organization, but in this case it is a weakness. The demographic forces will not have much of any impact on whichever direction Staples takes as it is a low area of concern. The office supplies industry has taken into account everyone which includes all age groups, small and large businesses, school goers, young children, and tech friendly customers. Some demographic areas may have more items to at their disposal than others, but Staples has considered all aspects and in doing so they carry a wide range of inventory for all which is available in the stores or online. His vision of Staples’ path to success was enforced for as long as it could have, but unfortunately with the changing times it did not prove to be enough to carry them out of the hard times that they are experiencing. As a result of this, he resigned from as the CEO and Shira Goodman was voted into his place. However, this is presented as a weakness as Goodman has not been a CEO
