In today’s education schools spend most of their focus on Standardized Testing. Standardized testing is limiting the education student are receiving. . “Standardization reduces the quality and quantity of what is taught and learned in schools” (McNeil 36). Standardized testing is having a negative effect on schools because they do not measure achievement adequately, Teachers are being forced to teach to the test, and students are struggling with test anxiety.
Standardized tests were created to measure the achievement of the school, students, and teachers. Achievement is defined by students reaching the schools educational goals. “A study by the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing found that teachers have started planning their curricula around state tests” (Evans). Many schools spend a lot of time preparing students to take standardized tests by engaging them in test-like activities rather than focusing on meaningful learning experiences. When teachers are forced to teach to the test it limits the amount of time they have to focus on higher-order thinking skills. Higher-order thinking skills will help students succeed in all aspects of their lives. According to Sternberg when teachers start teaching to the test results in standardized teaching methods. Standardized teaching disables teachers from being attentive to all of the students’ different learning needs. The pressure to teach the test and increase students’ scores impairs teachers from being aware of a student’s needs. This results in students scoring poorly on standardized testing.
