Stalking: The Killing of Actress RebeccaShaeffer

Stalking up until the late 80’s was never recognized by state or federal law and was never publicized until the killing of actress Rebecca Shaeffer, most notable role “My Sister Sam.” Shaeffer was living in California at the time of her murder. She was murdered by her stalker of two years, Robert John Bardo. Before, stalking laws, he would have been labeled as an obsessed fan. It took the actions of an actress being murder before any state or federal legislators to see a need for anti-stalking laws. Up until this period in time, law enforcement had little power to deter stalkers and relied heavily on reactionary police work, oppose to pro- active police work. The most important information on stalking is to know your legal rights (laws), what type of stalker you may be dealing with and how to protect yourself or limit you probability of being stalked
First of all, law is not cut and dry, and the law can be very wordy to the average reader. Stalking is defined differently in all 50 states, but can broadly summed up best from the National Institute of Justice:
“Stalking is conservatively defined as "a course of conduct directed at a specific person that involves repeated (two or more occasions) visual or physical proximity, nonconsensual communication, or verbal, written, or implied threats, or a combination thereof, that would cause a reasonable person fear." [1] Stalking behaviors also may include persistent patterns of leaving or sending the victim unwanted items or presents that may range from seemingly romantic to bizarre, following or laying in wait for the victim, damaging or threatening to damage the victim's property, defaming the victim's character, or harassing the victim via the Internet by posting personal information o...
