How Stalking Changes Lives Stalking is extremely dangerous, and most victims of this crime report that their lives are changed forever because they live the rest of their lives in constant fear. This act of crime is commonly underestimated and not seen as threatening as it is. In most cases, stalking can only be stopped with the help of law enforcement. Victims and stalkers are both affected by stalking, and it is in their best interest for both to get serious help as soon as they can. Stalking is most commonly defined “...as non-consensual communication, and/or harassment of another person” (Spitz). Stalking can be ruled as a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the severity of the actions, but it is not considered illegal if one is not threatened or in potential danger. There are two types of stalking; one involves the victim and stalker having a personal relationship with one another, while the other involves the two having no connection at all (Accomando and Anderson). Most people assume that most stalking victims are women, but law officials have found that the number of male and female victims are roughly equal (Brownstein). It has been proven that, “The nature of the relationship between targets and stalkers seems to be different for women and men.” Statistically, females usually know their stalker, while male victims usually have no personal relationship with their stalker (Accomando and Anderson). Most of the time, men will not report that they are being stalked unless they feel it is life threatening because some do not see women as a threat (Wigman). Celebrities need to be made aware of how to handle stalkers, so that when they are faced with the problem they can deal with it properly. Anyone around you can be a stalker. Stalkers come from all and any socio-economc background. There are categories made for stalkers but at times, not every stalker fits in each characteristics perfectly. According to the Sexual Assault prevention & Awareness Center, there are six categories of stalkers. The Rejected stalker, Resentful stalker, Predatory stalker, Intimacy seeker, Incompetent suitor, and Erotomania and Morbidly Infatuated.
As it is in the case of the majority of violent crimes, (Davies and Rogers, 2006) perpetrators of violent crimes, and especially sexual assault related crimes exert additional force by threatening the victim or their families. Male victims also must contend with an additional sense of shame and embarrassment in being identified with a crime that has been typically portrayed in the media as happening to women. It started slowly, with just him not wanting me to go to one type of social event because he didn’t like the people there. Then it got worse and worse. He was trying to control me by alienating me from my friends. After a bit I started fighting back, which made his obsession with controlling me as his possession stronger. When I finally asked him to leave he threatened to kill himself. I finally got him out, and he was staying at his mother 's house, but then the stalking started. On page 92 in the book, Cooper-White explains stalking by outlining the Justice Department 's Stalking Victimization Survey 's seven types of harassing behaviors: "1. Making unwanted phone calls, 2. Sending unsolicited or unwanted letters or emails, 3. Following or spying on the victim, 4. Showing up at places without a legitimate reason, 5. Waiting at places for the victim, 6. Leaving unwanted items, presents or flowers, and 7. Posting information or spreading rumors about the victim on the Internet, in a public place, or by word of mouth". There are many different forms of stalking, sure some of them may seem harmless but it is difficult to differentiate harmful situations and acts from harmless situations and acts. It’s just that their methods have changed. Some stalkers might harass you by following you through live channels not being able to take no for an answer and bothering you with email messages. In some cases this harassment may become a systematic campaign against you; where your harasser bombards you with threatening messages of hate and obscenities. (1996, p.3) The stalker may even trace your home address and telephone number, causing not only emotional distress but possibly physical danger. I have been making really bad decision and been so sad without my parents around for a while. So I believe it is about time that I accept that my parents are gone and this house that we all lived in as a family is the only memory I have left. And selling it is just me just running away from my past. I think it would be a good idea to get someone come in and take a look at the house to see what structural damage is her and what can be done to fix it. I think I could raise a family here and pass these memories to my kids. I should call Mark and pass my ideas to him; I think he would like what I have in mind.
