Queer animal sex and non-human mammal homosexual activities can be expressed through both illustration and content with chapter two of Stacy Alaimo’s Exposed. A multitude of strange and unique ideas will emerge in her argument. Alaimo in chapter two argued the supposition that many people in modernized society have the conceptualization of homosexuality not being a byproduct of nature. The public is still in belief that queer activities are bizarre and perverse, when undoubtedly there is a vast magnitude of homosexual happenings in nature. She argues that non-human mammals in their natural habitat are found engaging in these so-called outlandish endeavors. Suppressed by society, she aims to expose what is hidden and make sense that these queer activities are prevalent. In her claim, she wields three techniques. Ethos, pathos, and logos. Credibility, emotion, and logic. With each one being used to make light of her belief, some reign with greater strength than others. When in fact, Alaimo debunks their claims with the research and sources within her book. All though the reliance on resources may have been at times a little redundant, it is understandable why she must do so. It creates a metaphorical wall of protection that she can stand behind to support her claims. She creates a layer of trust by stating the opposing theses, in doing so it shows that she is not scared to let the readers recognize the opposition. Also this shows the confidence she possess in her research and defending her topic. With little research and checking on her sources, the credibility meets beyond expectations. For years the LGBT community has been consistently denied the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts, and it wasn’t until last year that same sex marriage became legal throughout the United States. However, they are not the only minorities being discriminated against in the United States. That is why Dolores Huerta, a well-known civil rights activist, points out that people who have experienced oppression should come together to achieve equality. In her keynote speech at the 21st National Conference on LGBT Equality, Dolores Huerta uses ethos, logos, and pathos as an effective way to inspire her audience to make a change in society.
Alex Johnson wrote a short story “How to Queer Ecology: One Goose at a Time” that revolved around the idea of human and nature. Spoke about how the two are connected where sexuality, culture and science are part of the seven steps to queer ecology. Johnson asked questions such as “Where is the line between what is Nature and what is Human? Do I spend equal times in the parking lot and the forest? Can I really say the parking lot is separate from the forest? What if I end up staying in the parking lot the whole time? What if it has been a long drive and I really have to pee?” allowing the readers to not only consume information but cross-examine what the readers have read. They mention the transition of “the closet,” as being a place in which people could not see you, to becoming a metaphor over the last two decades of the twentieth century used for queers who face a lack of sexual identity. Shneer and Aviv bring together two conflicting ideas of the American view of queerness: the ideas of the past, and the present. They state as queerness became more visible, people finally had the choice of living multiple lives, or integrating one’s lives and spaces (Shneer and Aviv 2006: 245). They highlight another change in the past twenty years as the clash between being queer and studying queerness (Shneer and Aviv 2006: 246-7). They argue that the active and visible contests over power among American queers show that queers now occupy an important place in our culture. They expand on the fact that queerness, real, and performed, is everywhere (Shneer and Aviv 2006: 248). This source shows the transformation in American culture of the acceptance of queerness. It shares the ideals of gender theory, applying to sexuality the idea that gender is a performative adherence to capitalist structures that inform society of what it means to be male, female, gay, and straight. An individual’s conformity to sexual or gendered expectations indicates both perpetration and victimization of the systemic oppression laid down by patriarchal foundations in the interest of maintaining power within a small group of people. Seeking to deconstruct the absolute nature of binary opposition, queer theory highlights and celebrates literary examples of gray areas specifically regarding sexual orientation, and questions those which solidify heterosexuality as the “norm”, and anything outside of it as the “other”.
In this essay, Gay deconstructs the stereotypical view of a feminist, by showing that you can be a feminist, even if you’re not in the small box the rest of the world thinks you should be in, in order to qualify as a ‘feminist’. However, the stigma of openly sexual women was not eliminated therefore marking down women's sexual freedom because of the stigma they carry in society.In conclusion, chapter by chapter hooks highlights how feminist theory repeatedly excluded non-white and working class women by ignoring white supremacy as a racial problem and by disregarding the highly psychological impact of class in their political and social status all while, in the case of black women, facing three classes of oppression in a racist, sexist and capitalist state. Throughout the book the author defines feminism, the meaning of sisterhood, what feminism is to men in addition to brushing upon power, work, violence and education. Although I found some elements of this book problematic hooks' critiques of feminist theory and the movement are well-presented, piercingly direct and remain relevant.
In the face of a homophobic society we need creative and critical processes that draw out the complexity of lesbian lives and same sex choices, not a retreat into the comforting myths of heroines and unfractured, impeachable identities
