Saint Rita of Cascia, born as Margherita Lotti, is the saint of impossible or hopeless cases. She was a very influential woman when she was alive and after she had passed away. Margherita was born on 1381 in a town called Roccaporena in Italy, near Cascia, Italy. As a child she had always admired the nuns in the convents. She knew she wanted to be a nun when she grew up, but her parents decided that she would be better off if she got married. She was married to Paolo Mancini because she went on to realize that maybe this was the path God wanted her to follow. She was in the marriage for eighteen horrible years, but she was blessed with twins, both boys. However, her husband was a watchman for the village, so he was often pulled into the conflict of the rivalry between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. My grandfather had a very terrible disease called Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ASL. This disease weaken muscles and severely impacts physical function, and it is incurable. St. Rita is the saint of impossible or hopeless cases and that is what I saw my grandfather's disease as. I watched him get weak emotionally, physically, and socially, but he was still the funny and sweet man he had always been. St. Rita of Cascia is a great representation of my grandfather because although they both had limitations, they never stopped being who they truly were. He was always there for me, so I decided to do my confirmation, not only for myself and God, but also my grandpa. If I had known about Saint Rita when my grandfather was sick, I would have prayed to her every single day, but now that I know about her I can pray to her for other things I need help with.
