Islam’s orderly politics, its vast society of members, and its rigid explanation of monotheism all melt into one religion; its members identified as Muslims, meaning one who submits to the will of Allah. All these ideas and customs originated from the mouth of Muhammad, who is Allah’s one prophet according to Muslims. Islam teaches its members to trust in Allah, as shown in its Five Pillars. Islam’s infusion into everyday society around the world was not a mistake; two main factors helped disperse Islam’s ideas and customs in under 200 years. Islam spread so quickly because of conquest and political order, the two most important aspects bringing great recognition to this widely spread religion. According to The Ordinances of Government written in 975 CE, caliphs are required to maintain a certain number of duties, including “To wage… jihad [holy war] against those who, after having been invited to accept Islam, persist in rejecting, until they either become Muslims or enter the Pact so that God’s truth may prevail over every religion.” (Al-Mawardi ME 14). This duty of a caliph requires him to go to war, enter the Pact (an arrangement allowing non-Muslims to keep their religion and pay a special tax) , or have non-Muslims convert if they have been invited to accept Islam, and the majority of people would rather convert than go to war to pay taxes, therefore spreading Islam throughout non-Muslim communities. In addition to this duty of a caliph, The Origins of the Islamic State states that the people of Hims replied to the Muslim’s offer of allowing them to continue being non-Muslims in this way: “‘We like your rule and justice far better than the state of oppression and tyranny in which we were. The army of Heraclius we shall indeed … repulse from the city.’’’ (al- Baladhuri ME 15). This statement proved that the Islamic World’s way of conducting politics was much more favorable to other empire’s tyranny or monarchy, and encouraged other non-Muslims to convert in order to become part of this peaceful and orderly world.
