Athens and Sparta were two very different ancient Greek city-states, but these two Greek city-states did share some similarities. Athens and Sparta were different in almost every way. The ways and conditions of life for each city-state was quite different. However, Athens and Sparta did share a few similarities between each other.

One example of how Athens and Sparta were different is their government. Each city-state had a different form of government. To start, Athens had a democratic government. The city-state of Athens became a democratic government around the time of 500 B.C.E. According to TCI Lesson 17, "Every citizen could take part in the city's government." As a part of all citizens participating in a government, the names of all the citizens over the age of 30 were gathered, and then 500 of those names were chosen to be a part of the Council of 500, a group that met everyday to run the daily business of the Athenian government. The rest of the Athenian citizens were part of the Assembly of Athens, a very large group of citizens who met every ten days to discuss issues with the Council of 500, and vote on possible new laws. Unlike the Athenian government, the Spartan government was an oligarchy. According to TCI Lesson 17, "...the important decisions were actually made by a much smaller group called the Council of Elders." Two kings (who both shared equal power) and 28 other men, were part of the Council of Elders. According to TCI Lesson 17, "To be elected to the Council of Elders, men had to be at least 60 years old and from a noble family." This shows how men had got to be a part of the Council of Elders.
