Southwest Airline’s Financial Overview
The Air Southwest Company was founded March 15, 1967; however, it was not until June 18, 1971 that the service started, servicing Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, Texas airports. Moreover, the reason for the delay was their battle through the courts to get their certificate of public convenience and necessity. They changed their name to Southwest Airlines in 1971. The two founders were Mr. Rollin King and Mr. Herb Kelleher. Mr. King passed away at the age of 83 in 2014 and Mr. Kelleher is currently 86 years old and lives in Texas. They felt threatened by a new airline starting up in Texas. Moreover, Mr. King and Mr. Kelleher’s goal were to provide a low-cost, efficient, comfortable flight to three key cities in Texas. The cities were, Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas (Southwest Airlines Co., n.d.). Since their inception, Southwest Airlines have continued to add destinations to their servicing area. They listed on their 2016 Form 10-K, their service area covers 40 states, DC, Puerto Rico, and eight South American countries (Southwest Airlines Co, 2017).
