Southern Gothic Style in Flannery O’Connor’s A Good Man is Hard to Find

American literature refers to written or literary work produced in the area of the United States and Colonial America. It has many forms and different kinds of authors within its genre. One American author, Flannery O'Connor, is known for her Southern Gothic style of writing. In her short story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" O'Connor uses the Southern Gothic style, brought on by her background, to establish various ties between the characters and their actions.

Flannery O'Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia on March 25, 1925. Growing up in the Deep South, her family was of Catholic religion. During her lifetime, O'Connor wrote two novels and 32 short stories among other works. Many of her stories take place in the south such as Tennessee, Georgia, and often in the back woods or rural areas. According to Friedman she is like so many Southern writers with her deep devotion to her birthplace. Her Catholic background is also said to have been an influence on the numerous works she wrote. "She credits a good deal of her success as a novelist to the region she comes from and to her position as a practicing Catholic," (Friedman 234).The style of Southern Gothic focuses on unusual events to guide the plot. It also explores social issues and reveals the cultural character of the American South. Most of the characters in O’Connor’s stories are “displaced persons…they are off center [and] out of place,” (236). In her short "A Good Man is Hard to Find" examples of the Southern Gothic guide is used to capture the exploration of the average American family.

Another explanation behind the touch is that is can tie back into religious meanings. “A touch on the shoulder suggests the ceremonial dubbing of knighthood that recognizes the squire as a worthy representative of Christian chivalry…” (130). The actions of the Grandmother involving the name of the Jesus and the touch, provoked the Misfit to commit his heinous crime which ironically granted the Grandmother salvation.

Although “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a short story, the text deeply analyzes and exhibits diverse characters and the consequences behind their actions. Flannery O’Connor and her use of the Southern Gothic style places the Misfit and the Grandmother, two opposing persons in the literal sense, to convey that in unusual circumstances and places ones true character can be revealed.
