We all have fears and risks we face everyday. In Sonny’s Blues there are numerous accounts of genuine fear and unbelievable risks. The narrator of the story is the elder brother to Sonny. Sonny and the narrator go through hard times when their lives separate because of Sonny’s heroin addiction. He was arrested and the narrator resented him and his choices. Growing up in Harlem was difficult. The author describes it as “rocks in the middle of a boiling sea.” The projects, where Sonny and his brother grew up together, were filled with drugs and violence. Children in that environment are affected and inevitably will follow in the footsteps of their society. The author’s reference is to express the awful conditions of being inside the projects. He paints an incredible picture of the cold brutal conditions of the buildings; thus the rocks in the middle of a boiling sea, as Sonny and the narrator are driving through their childhood neighborhood.
