When British people first discovered the New World, they had to write some accounts of the new life that they saw. The Colonial Period, ranging from about 1607 to the late 1700s, saw early American literature starting to grow. This new American literature was influenced by the British and had many characteristics. Some important characteristics of American Literature at that time would be religion and narrative. We can see this from the writing accounts of many colonial authors like William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet, and Jonathan Edwards. During this time, two groups emerged from the colonial period. The Puritans believed that man existed for the glory of god and they also believed in having a government run by religious authorities. If one was to disrespect God, they would be publicly shamed. We can see religion in almost all American literature during this time, however, these writers are usually puritans. Take Anne Bradstreet for example, she was a puritan, lived during the colonial period, and was a writer. In Anne Bradstreet's poem titled Some Verses Upon the Burning of Our house, she recalls when her house burned down. Her puritan beliefs affected the context of the poem because she references God throughout the poem. In her poem she says, “ And to my God my heart did cry”, “I blest His name that gave and took”,“By Him who hath enough to do.“ From these lines you can clearly see the references to god. Another good example of religious text during the colonial period is Sinner’s in the Hands of an Angry God. This sermon was spoken to a group people in a church, a place where religion is taken seriously. In the sermon, Jonathan Edwards talks about God wrath if you sin against him. He uses fear and vivid imagery to control the audience's behavior. Edwards was also a Puritan and he was speaking the sermon to more Puritans.
