The film Some Like It Hot at first seemed like a risky film due to its sense of humor and the many innuendos that it makes. However, this film quickly gained popularity due to all of the elements of a farce that are present throughout the film. Some of the elements of a farce that are applied to Some Like It Hot include disguise, humor and innuendo, a fast paced plot, and broadly stylized performances. Some Like It Hot seems to revolve around disguise due to the fact that two of the main characters, Daphne and Josephine, are actually men disguised as women. After witnessing a murder, Joe and Jerry join a female band to help them in their rush to leave town. Disguised as women, we watch them try to conceal their identities and blend in as …show more content…
It is hard to follow the plot of Some Like It Hot, because the plot keeps moving on to different things. We first are shown Jerry and Joe trying to run away from mobsters after witnessing a murder, but then the plot then moves on to focus around the troubles of the two men trying to stay disguised as women very quickly. Then add in Sugar as a love interest for Josephine, then Joe taking on another disguise, Osgood becoming enamored with Daphne, Jerry accepting Osgood’s proposal as Daphne, the plot goes on. There are so many changes and things happening that at times it is hard to keep up. The final aspect of a farce that is applied to Some Like It Hot that I am going to talk about is the broadly stylized performances. Some of the stylized performances in this film are meant to mock/ mimic some of the other movies that were around during this time. In the beginning, when the mobsters were shooting the other guys it was a very theatrical performance that wasn’t very realistic. The scene was meant to mock/ mimic the other mobster movies from that period that had the elaborate shooting scenes with the sparks shooting out of the gun and everything. We also get a chase seen at the end when Sugar runs to catch up with Josephine, aka Joe, who is departing on the yacht with Daphne and
Some examples of farce in the movie are: • In the beginning of the movie, you hear the sound of music and horses. However, it turns out that it was not horses at all; it was the sound of King Arthur’s squire pounding two coconut halves together to make the sound of horses galloping. They then go on to confront two soldiers at the castle gates to invite their lord to be apart of the round table. they approach a castle and are quickly confronted by soldiers on top of the castle walls. The soldiers went on to question their mode of transportation.
Dark humor and satire were present in the original film, in order to provide a break from the intensity and paranoi...
Every sexual orientation and lifestyle is explored in this film, through each individual character. Albert plays the emotional, insecure, flighty homosexual male. Armand plays the part of a more reserved, logical, manly homosexual. The Senator is a conservative, political white man who claims to be interested in family values and morality. Both he and his wife are upper class snobs, who do not want to associate with "commoners." Armands first wife plays the part of a desperately horny, divorced woman. Val and Barbara are the only couple that would be deemed "normal" by society. The two show no outlandishc or unusual characteristicsl.
“Cool girl is hot. Cool girl is game. Cool girl is fun. Cool girl never gets angry at her man. She only smiles in a chagrin, loving manner” (Gone Girl). The description of a “cool girl” by the main character of the film “Gone Girl”, Amy Dunne, directly applies to the modern-day depiction of a cool girl as seen through the music of female artists such as Halsey and Tove Lo. Both women bring a new approach to the term cool girl and change the images of females in the music industry using their lyrics and style. Using their femininity, they dispute the idea that the music industry is male dominated and they are breaking the expectations of what topics are appropriate for women to discuss in music.
In this musical, it uses several types of narratives, for example, after the fight between the Jets and Puerto Ricans, after the police leave, they enter the ally and the girl is begging to join the gang saying how much she wants to fight is a part of narrative sexuality (B 34). The girl is more of a tom boy who wants to be like one of the guys.
Gender and the portrayal of gender roles in a film is an intriguing topic. It is interesting to uncover the way women have been idealized in our films, which mirrors the sentiments of the society of that period in time. Consequently, the thesis of this essay is a feminist approach that seeks to compare and contrast the gender roles of two films. The selected films are A few Good Men and Some Like it Hot.
Walking into the filled theater room, inhaling the stuffy air that is heavily scented with the mixture of freshly buttered popcorn and molded clothes, one can simply infer that it was the most anticipated movie. The lights begin to dim, it is time for the show to start. Norbit, the most anticipated comedy, was a hit. The film Norbit used both comedy and romance to tell a true love story, a set back in the film was the director's decision of having Cuba Gooding, Jr. play a part in the film.
Some Girl(s) is not told from a first person perspective, but it centers on a writer whose past is an important element in his storytelling. As the reader we never hear the actual stories, but it is clear that they contain many aspects about Guy’s “romantic foibles” (LeBute 76). The crime of which Guy is most guilty is his decision to run away when he wanted to end a relationship instead of engaging in confrontation.
The plays trajectory throughout does not disappoint audience members as its quick paced plot continues through each of the vignettes unraveling more of each characters background. According to Joe Belanger of the London Free Press, the fast-paced show “featuring eight vignettes, [shorter than the original play] each carrying a character from the previous scene until the show comes full ‘circle’ to the real life of the bi sexual Ben whom we meet in the first scene where he was hoping to meet ‘Louis’ who turns out to be Lois” leaves the audience appreciating each of the characters for who they are (Belanger). The initial introduction between the two characters is interesting in itself—Ben looking for a man to satisfy his needs. However, to his

To conclude, “Just Go With It” is an appropriate example of a romantic comedy because it includes a lighthearted atmosphere while still including the comedic conflicts revolving around romance the main characters go through found in a typical romantic comedy film. The film conveys its value messages of fate and honesty through the plot and uses codes and conventions like camera shots, characters, and plot, defining it as a true romantic comedy.
Russell’s success by saying “Russell’s streak reminds me of Billy Wilder in his late 50’s-early 60’s later prime. In the span of four years that prolific writer/director turned out Some Like It Hot (1959), The Apartment (1960), One Two Three (1961), and Irma La Douce (1963), offering choice roles repeatedly to the likes of Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine to name two. Actors loved Wilder and returned to work with him often. And they seem to love Russell.” This quote displays the parallel between Wilder and Russell’s success. This success is not coincidental and after analyzing the report these men create with their actors and the immense scale of the stories they write. Although Wilder has passed away, his style is far from gone and David O. Russell will continue to implement these conventions and build upon them in the years to

William Shakespeare's plays come in many forms. There are histories, tragedies, comedies and tragic comedies. Among the most popular are the comedies which are full of laughter, irony, satire and wordplay. Many times the question is asked: what makes a play a comedy instead of a tragedy. Shakespeare's comedies often use puns, metaphors and insults to provoke 'thoughtful laughter'. The action is often strained by artificiality, especially elaborate and contrived endings. Disguises and mistaken identities are often very common. Opposed to that are the tragedies, where the reader would find death, heartbreak, and more serious plots and motives. The plot is very important in Shakespeare's comedies. It is often very convoluted, twisted and confusing, and extremely hard to follow. Other characteristics of Shakespearean comedy are the themes of love and friendship, played within a courtly society. Songs often sung by a jester or a fool, parallel the events of the plot. Minor characters, which add flavor to the plot, are often inserted into the storyline. Love provides the main ingredient. If the lovers are unmarried when the play opens, they either have not met or there is some obstacle to their relationship. Examples of these obstacles are familiar to every reader of Shakespeare: the slanderous tongues which nearly wreck love in "Much Ado About Nothing", the father insistent upon his daughter marrying his choice, as in "A Midsummer Nights Dream", or the confusion of husbands in "The Comedy of Errors".
