The National Toxicity Program found “clear evidence” of 4-Mel toxicity in sodas and linked 4-Mel to infertility, thyroid dysfunction and liver and lung cancer. The soda industry doesn’t use organic sugar canes, instead they use the cheap white bleached sugar. This why sugar increases the insulin level and eventually causes high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, heart diseases, and a lot of other dangerous diseases. Sodas such as Coke and Pepsi have phosphoric acids. The phosphoric acid affect the ability of your body to absorb calcium and it soften your bones and teeth and causes osteoporosis. Studies said that 2 out of 3 adults and 1 out of 3 childrens in the United States are overweight or obese. A 20 ounce soda contains about 15-18 teaspoons of sugar and upward to 240 calories. The 64-ounce cola drink could have up to 700 calories. Some people who are against the soda ban said that why would the mayor bsan the sugary drinks but not the other calorated meals. Well it is proved that People who drink this sugary drinks do not feel as full as if they had eaten the same calories from solid food and do not compensate by eating less. So if people drink one can of Coke for example, they will want more cause they won’t feel as full as if they eat a hamburger. One study said that for each additional 12-ounce soda childrens got each day, the odds of becoming obese increased by 60% during 1 and a half years of follow-up. No one wants his kids to be obese and want them to live a hard life. If someone really loves soda, sugar-free drinks don’t increase the risk of obesity and it is not banned. Having many of these genes does not guarantee people will become obese, but if they drink a lot of sugary beverages, 'they fulfill that fate,' said an expert called Jules Hirsch of Rockefeller University in New York. The relationship between sugary drinks and obesity is that the obesity rates have risen at least the double since 1970s in the United States of America. Although sugary drinks are not always the
The article,“ Battle lines drawn over soda tax,” by Associated Press , the Press explains how there is an ongoing “national fight about taxing sugary drinks.” According to Associated Press, “ Health experts say the beverages contribute to health issues such as diabetes, obesity, and tooth decay.” This quote demonstrates that sugary drinks can lead to health issues. Since sugary drinks leads to health issues, people are considering soda tax. This is because thirteen percent of adult minorities are diagnosed with diseases such as diabetes.
Mayor Bloomberg’s plan is to decrease the amount of sugar intake that Americans digest. However, to do this successfully, he would need to include all sugary products that affect Americans, not just the most popular products, which happens to be soda. When you take away soda, people will start to replace the drink with something more available. The replacement drink could easily be something more caloric or sugary than the banned drink. Therefore, no change is made. Pure juices have the potential to be unhealthier than soda. These factors need to be considered when deciding what or what not to ban. It would be unfair to target soda and the companies that profit off of soda, without considering the other sugary products and their effect on the world. Some could argue that juice comes from fruit, while soda is artificial. Also, sugars in juice are more natural than the high fructose corn syrup. All the while, this is suppose to support the idea that juice is healthier than soda. However, according to the journal, Nutrition, fruit juice, on average, has a fructose concentration of about 45.5 grams per liter. 45.5 grams per liter is only a bit less than the average 50 grams per liter for
Evan Cook's article "No! Let us enjoy our sweet drinks in peace" was written to persuade us that soda and sugary drinks are not the cause of the health problems and warning labels don't help people consume less soda.Cook states that soda is not the only cause of obesity. In the 4th paragraph he states, "Inactivity and overeating both contribute..." His intention was to tell us soda does not cause us to be unhealthy, it is us choosing to not exercise and having food carvings. These choices impact our bodies by turning the extra energy from the extra food into fat. If we don't exercise the fat will stay there making us get obese overtime. In the 8th paragraph Cook states, "Psychological studies have shown...that for cigarette smokers, warning
New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg tried to ban the sale of drinks with high sugar in containers bigger than 16 ounces, but this ban was opposed and halted, with the New York State Supreme Court judge ruling Bloomberg must go through city council and the board of health to institute the ban
“there’s a fundamental difference between the sugar that you find in fruits & vegetables and the sugar that you find in a large Mountain Dew. The sugar in a lot of these carbonated drinks is highly concentrated simple sugar, the kind that will spike your blood glucose levels, reduce your insulin response over time (leading to Type 2 diabetes) and almost immediately get stored in your body as fat.” There is a difference between sugar from nature and sugar that is processed. Sugar that is processed is highly concentrated because of this it tends to increase your blood glucose levels higher than natural sugar. With high
First, the main ingredients in diet soda, and why they are so harmful. The main ingredients that are in diet soda are aspartame and saccharin. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener, and it is a protein produced from aspartic acid. Aspartame is used in any different foods and drinks because it is about 200 times sweeter than sugar, so that means much less of it can be used to give the same amount of sweetness. When aspartame is digested, it breaks down into aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol. These components are also used in a selection of foods such as milk, meat, dried beans, fruits and vegetables, but much greater amounts are used in diet soda. Another reason Aspartame is terrible for you is that when Aspartame gets to a certain temperature it is known as rat poison. Also, 10% of aspartame is made up of methyl ester bond which includes methanol. After a few hours of ingesting aspartame, this methanol is released from the aspartame and begins roaming through the body through the blood. After the methyl ester is unglued it separates into wood alcohol. The conflict with this methanol is that it easily passes through your blood-...
If you are not convinced, a very prominent side effect of this shift is seen in the Australian child obesity statistics. According to the ABS, in 2008, a staggering 25% of Australian children were suffering from obesity and the amount of obese boys aged 5-17 has doubled since 1995. That is a quarter of children gasping for air as they merely walk. A major cause of these terrifying statistics is due to sugar alone. A report from the Australian newspaper said “Children consume three times more sugar than is recommended. Soft drinks are the biggest source, accounting for 29% of the sugar intake of 11 to 18 year olds and 16% for younger children.” Soft drink consumption in Australia has shot up from an average of 65 litres per year in the early 1970s to about 100 litres today. We as a nation can no longer hide away from this epidemic, if we continue with our current habits then our children’s futures are already written for them. Their lives will become ones of suffering and short life expectancies. We need to stop this now before obesity kills our
It is sad. People from all races and backgrounds are obese. In a recent survey done at Henry Ford College, 43 percent of students were overweight. Whether it is because they do not follow a healthy diet or they inherited it from their parents. Being overweight is correlated with lacking exercise or physical activity and not watching what is on the plate. Obesity can cause many illnesses, including diabetes, which is very common. As the debate whether soda tax should take effect arises, critics say that the tax will help those with obesity-related illnesses. What about exercising and maintaining a healthy lifestyle? These two factors cannot be forgotten knowing they are the most important. Americans have consumed 12 percent of soda and become less active since 1970. A soda tax aims to stop consumers from buying soda to help those who are obese. This will not be effective. Therefore a soda tax will not be good public policy.
Soda is high in calories. A 20 ounce can of Coca Cola contains 17 teaspoons of sugar and 240 calories…empty calories devoid of any nutritional value. It would take the average adult over one hour of walking to burn off the 240 calories in a 20-ounce soda.Soda increases obesity risk in children. Each additional soda or other sugary drink consumed per day increases the likelihood of a child becoming obese by about 60%. Sugary drinks are connected to other health problems as well.Soda contains artificial sweeteners. While many people opt for artificial sugar to lower caloric intake the tradeoff for your health isn’t so sweet. Artificial sugars are linked to numerous illness and diseases including
Sugar has been known to be the single most influential ingredient on early childhood related obesity. Obesity in childhood causes wide range of serious problem later on in life as it tends to make the human body unhealthy and overweight at a young age in which creates
This article is talking about a mayor banning beverages larger than 16 oz. at restaurants, sports arenas and movie theaters. The reason this mayor wants to ban large sodas is because he is afraid for all of New York’s health. That’s a good thing because a lot of us don’t know what we drink and eat most of the time. We just eat our food we don’t even bother to look what’s really in side such as calories, fats and oils in our food. This Mayor is doing New York a huge favor by banning large sodas. He’s helping everyone in New York about their health but people of New York doesn’t see that. There are people who are trying to not let him pass this law because some of them probably drink 16 oz. every day of once a week or twice a week or even more.
are overweight or obese. A rising consumption of sugary drinks has been a major contributor to the obesity epidemic. On any given day, half the people in the U.S. consume sugary drinks. (“Sugary Drinks”). Also people are decaying their teeth from consuming so much sugar.
My three reasons are soda is not the only cause of obesity, soda tax and putting warning labels on our drinks defeats the purpose and has less impact on warning will have. I believe that sweet drinks shouldn't have labels on them because if you have too much of anything its bad for you. Soda is not the only reason people are obese. In the article, Evan Cook states overeating and inactivity contributes to obesity. " Cameron English suggest that the "Public Health advocates who primarily lay blame for obesity on soda often cite studies linking decreased consumption of the drink with weight loss.
beverages may play a role in the epidemic of obesity." American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Have you ever thought how much soda you consume and how bad it can be for you? Many people will drink soda instead of water, simply because it tastes better. The government should limit the intake of sugary beverages because it can lead to many different problems such as heart disease, obesity, and overall it is an unhealthy life-style. “The average person consumes almost 100lbs of sugar a year, with the single biggest source being soda.” A sugary beverage occasionally would be ok, but drinking it every day would cause problems for you overtime. People drink, more soda than they do water. People should be consuming at least eight 8-ounce glasses a day. Mostly no one will drink that amount of water a day. In today’s society, it can be easy to grab a soda for one dollar and carry on. They may taste better but they are not better for your health. “Sugary drinks include soda, fruit punch, lemonade, and other “aides” sweetened powdered drinks, and sports energy drinks.”
