Sociology is the study of human society and social behavior from large institutions to small groups and individual interactions. Sociology plays a major part in everyone’s everyday life the roles that have helped me become the person that I am today are race, social class, gender, & culture. The agent of socialization that has had a great impact on me has been my family. Sociological imagination is a quality of the mind that allows us to understand the relationship between our individual circumstances and larger social forces (Ferris & Stein 12). Coming from a minority group Mexican background, ethnicity and race played a huge role in my life. Ethnicity is a socially defined category based on common language, religion, nationality, history, or another cultural factor (Ferris & Stein 218). Being a female it included Cleaning, cooking, laundry and helping around the household. While my brothers got to run around and play with no curfews or no chaperones. Gender the physical, behavioral, and personality traits that a group considers normal for its male and female members (Ferris & Stein 243). My parents at a very young age told me that girls should not be running around the streets that they should not hang around with boys. I was dressed in dressed and sparkly shoes at a very young age and was given Barbie’s and girly toys to play with. When I was in elementary and in the first grade things changed I enjoyed running around and getting sweaty and dirty that’s when I decided to join the basketball my mom was actually supportive regardless that I was the only girl in the team I later went on to join the cheerleading team, jazzercise club, choir, spelling bee and the recycling club.
