Recommended: The influence of fashion and fashion lifestyles in our society

In what situation is it appropriate to label one’s personal problem as the community’s problem? The term sociological imagination stem from this issue. Little (2016) cites C. Wright Mill’s definition of the sociological imagination as “how individuals understand their own and others’ lives in relation to history and social structure” (Mills 1959 as cited in Little 2016:5). An individual must recognize the relationship between their own self and society. Distinguishing one’s self and the public’s dilemmas are crucial because the individual and the community can address the problems. By looking into the sociological lens, we determine one’s personal affairs and the society’s issues in “the macro and micro divide in sociology” (Little 2016:5). Sociological Imagination is “Mills way of addressing the dilemmas of the macro and micro divide in sociology” (Little 2016:5). An ongoing discussion about the problem with animal cruelty has sparked up within the community. The brand, Canada Goose, may have taken a toll on the individual and community. The brand has a poor reputation around the question of where and how they acquire the fur for their jackets. Some feel the need to follow the trends and invest in the latest fashion. Generally, it is not based upon an individual’s choice of actions, but also the influence of society. There is always the need for social acceptance within public. Society can influence one’s behavior, either positively or negatively. The problem with individuals following fashion trends, like purchasing Canada Goose merchandise, can affect the society. With the understanding of the sociological imagination, I began to notice the daily choices I make, the classes I attend, the way I was raised by my parents, the group of people I choose to hang out with, the things I like to converse about with others are all somehow affected by public issues and what society tends to make us believe is right. There are many areas in my life where I feel that I am greatly affected by various sociological theories such as events dealing with gender and sexuality, family and culture, ethnicity and race, and social class and work.
