C. Wright Mills used the term sociological imagination to describe “the awareness of the relationship between personal experience and the broader society” (Mills,1959). So in simpler terms, how the individual person is affected by their sociological surroundings. There are a numerous amount of factors responsible for shaping people into who they become. These factors may include, but are not limited to: socialization, gender, class, ethnicity and education. Everybody experiences life in their own unique way and each of these factors have a different impact on each individual’s life. Socialization represents the whole process of learning throughout one’s life and is a main influence on the behavior, beliefs, and actions of humans (Britannica, 2015). Personally, I feel that my culture and ethnicity has had a big role in developing my socialization. I come from your typical big Greek family. Being a teenage girl in todays society is a challenge. Society’s standards are constantly changing and vary based on time period and geographical locations. Girls are typically faced with a lot more things being expected of them and generally have higher standards set out for them to achieve compared to teenage boys. Its easy to let what society says “perfect” should be get to you and make you feel like you are not quite enough because you do not fit society’s expectations. I do think though that since I went to an all-girls high school for four years that I had a unique experience than most people have had. I feel as though being in an all-girls environment made me less aware and become less fixated on what I looked like constantly, which I think was a good thing because it made me feel more comfortable in my skin because on a daily basis I did not feel the need to wear a full face of makeup and try to impress anyone, but rather I was able to be more of
