In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, a group of british schoolboys are stranded on an island. In an island without adults or rules, they are forced to create their own rules and follow their own laws and order. However, two boys face each other in struggle for power to become leader, which creates separation among the boys and the death of one of the most intelligent boys, Piggy. In the end, the boys get rescued by a naval officer and revert back to little boys. In Lord of the Flies, Golding applies symbolism, foreshadowing, and irony to convey how society will be corrupt and destructive when civilization and order are lost. The …show more content…

When Ralph comes into realization, he says “The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away”(82). Ralph realizes that the society on the island is slowly being destroyed which foreshadows the loss of civilization and order on the island. The island is an “understandable” and “lawful world”, but since that is destroyed, society becomes corrupt and the boys become savages. Also, when Roger plays around with Henry, “Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter...Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. Roger’s arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins” (62). Even though Roger is playfully throwing stones at Henry to mess with him, this foreshadows Piggy’s death where Roger pushes the rock to kill Piggy. Ultimately, Roger is trained to be polite towards other boys based on where he grew up. However, the loss of civilization and order and separation of his family causes society to influence him, which foreshadows his murder of Piggy.
