A highly valued view of building the community is that students must have the capability to motivate themselves and the likelihood to be active in both educational and social experiences. Socializing contains a variety of features from transferring messages to self-disclosure. Online professors can support the socialization by making a forum for discussions. The term ‘water cooler forum’ came from workers gathering at a water cooler to socialize with one another. For the online professor, this concept of socializing is done in an online forum where both student and the professor participate. Online education can help encourage people to become independent, self-direct themselves, and socially communicate while not relying heavily upon the teacher for everything. Jaggars and Xu stated, “A recent experimental study comparing learning outcomes between online and face-to-face sections of an economics course found no significant difference between the two course formats among students with higher prior GPA’s; however, among those with lower prior GPA’s, those with online condition scored significantly lower on in-class exams than did those in the face-to-face sections. That is, low-GPA students had more difficulty adapting to the online context than did high GPA students” (Jaggars and Xu, Section 1). Unfortunately, a traditional classroom for the summer courses does not offer the best professional teaching and learning because of the type of staffing. The staff is generally graduate assistants who are poorly trained to do the job who just wants to get credit hours.
