Ethical Dilemma Ethical situations will present themselves and understanding the social work code of ethics can help in making simple ethical decisions. However, there will be times that circumstances require further insight on how to handle more complex decision making. Several models across many industries give adequate steps on how to make difficult ethical decisions.. The author feels that using the social worker model would be best. There are six steps in this ethical problem solving model. Reamer & Conrad’s (1995) explains these steps as: 1. DETERMINE whether there is an ethical issue or/and dilemma. 2. Social workers still need to be proponents of peace. An example of personal value would be over hearing negative comments in the hall about a client’s, or anyone else’s, racial background, sexual orientation, or mental illness. In these moments a social worker must decide and be prepared to make a stand. Based on this choice to respond or not will show others where one stands and what values they hold strong to not just a social working setting but in everyday life. A common theme throughout this capstone is that a social worker gives a voice to the voiceless even if we do not agree with the choices being made. At Weber Human Services in the adult psycho-educational day treatment, personal values are exposed every day. These clients come from all walks of life and many have been court ordered to attend the STEPS program. Working with these adults, most suffering from mental illness, it is the responsibility for the social worker to set professional and personal boundaries. In a group setting the social workers set the tone and hold themselves and clients accountable for behavior. Using personal values helps establish these boundaries and give the clients clear direction of how to interact with
