This is a struggle many young people have in today's society. You are told to go to school dress to the code, graduate go to university, get a job, get married have children, work some more, retire, live a life in set conformatitys and follow the society norm. While straying away from theses norms have traumatic consequences that will affect the way you are viewed in multiple ways. For example a typical 22 year old enjoys activities like smoke,drink or party hard in the club, they follow latest fashion and don't listen to elders in anyway. But there is a select few who don't enjoy such activities. These select few are considered strange or weird bny any social standard. This is solely because society has told them “that isn't how someone your age acts.” Breaking through these social norms is a struggle for anyone who doesn't follow the set path, for example if you have a kid before you graduate high school, you then are considered a slut or flimsy and get shamed for this, but coincidentally if you have a kid 4 years later it's a celebration of sorts. A Norm is something that is usual, typical, or standard. Therefore, a social norm would be an acceptable behavior that is standard in a social setting, community, or culture. For instance, a social norm is stopping at a red light, not picking your nose in public, and chewing with your mouth closed. These behaviors would be frowned upon if violated by others around you. Social norms, or behaviors vary, for example slurping in Hong Kong and Japan would demonstrate the enjoyment of your meal. If an American were to sit down at a restaurant and slurp their food, they would be making a scene and it would be considered rude and a disturbance.
In society, it's difficult to go against the norm. Individuals are compelled to act a specific way, or look a specific way in order to be accepted. For instance, teenagers may encounter pressure from their peers to partake in specific exercises that may not be moral, since they feel the need to fit in. This weight of conformity isn't just present in reality; it can be found in literature as well. The story "St. Lucy’s Home For Girls Raised by Wolves" by Karen Russell depicts that in order to conform to society, individuals abandon their selflessness and compassion and become selfish and apathetic.
Society in general has a way of assigning men and women with individual roles that need to be complied with. To clarify, in the 1950s and 1960s, American women were required to maintain their homes while raising their children and making sure the husbands were happy. On the other hand, American men had to provide for the family and protect them. Displaying characteristics not parallel to one’s gender is rarely unobserved and almost always has negative consequences because society seeks to maintain order. Folkways, which are based more on custom and etiquette, are the most broken of all norms. This can be explained because in the worst case scenario our only reprimand may be someone staring or talking about us. Mores, while a little more serious than folkways, still don’t have a very serious punishment, just maybe a little more than weird looks, double takes and bad mouthing.
There are many things that influence our behavior from internal influences to social norms. Social norms are implicit or explicit rules that govern how we behave in society (Maluso, class notes). Social norms influence our behavior more than any of us realize but we all notice when a norm has been broken. Breaking a social norm is not an easy task and often leads us feeling uncomfortable whether we broke the norm ourselves or witnessed someone else breaking it. Members of this society must learn what the appropriate way for them to behave is and what to expect of themselves and others. Growing up, gender roles were set on me as I played with fire trucks and cars, and my sisters played with Barbie's. The types of movies we watched were different and the types of books we read were also different. It would be thought of as bizarre for me, a male, to cry during Titanic, or to read Cinderella.
From what I understand, the norm is not something as the constitution, but more like the social morality. This is easier to do; I don’t need to try to do something weird because I already had many experiences like that. I’m sure many people have done something anybody think that was normal, however it turns out something so stupid that makes them embarrassed a lot every time they recall about it. Norms in society do not just come about randomly in one’s life, they start once a child is born. To emphasize, directly from infancy, children are being guided to norms due to their parents’ preferences and choices they create for them, whether it is playing with legos, or a doll house; gender classification begins in the womb. Society has engrained within its practices behaviors which are considered expected by groups of people that belong to it. Norm Violations thus are defined as the violation of expected behaviors. They also provide a sense of “normalcy” amongst individuals within a society. In the short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid is a story that everyone can related to. The story is about a mother telling her daughter what to do, what not to do and how to do things. Kind of like society or parents or a friends of what to do. There has also been always been expectations of what to do and how to do things in life regards of gender, nationality or religion. The male has he’s duties and the female has different duties. However, in the typical society today, a person is supposed to graduate from high school and go straight in to an Ivy League university, to get a degree in a field of study that makes lot of money. While working a person must save money for that dream big house with the white picket fence. At the same time, you have to look for that perfect spouse so you can have the big beautiful dream wedding. After the wedding it’s the romantic honeymoon to Bora Bora. After a couple years the baby comes, and you are a happy family. Typically, that is what parents teach their children of what is what is expected of them.
The expectations of society can either build an individuals decision-making process into generating norms and actions based on what society predisposes as socially acceptable. This can be something as simple as graduating high school an going to college, or it can be short-term and reflect a week schedule consisting of work, family time and Sunday church.
