There are different ways that people in society can help those who suffer from eating disorders, and ways we can improve the treatments and awareness that is already being done. Ways that society can adjust the current treatments for eating disorder to make them better could be encouraging them more and making society more aware about them. Some people may be unaware about of the various therapy treatments that exists, organizations, and groups. Sharing group therapy information on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) can increase the attendance for therapy groups. People think that eating disorders are “okay,” because they make people skinny, which some people perceive as the new “beautiful.” Some people say that media is not to blame for eating disorders, and the root of eating disorders are family issues or environmental factors. Though family issues and environmental factors are certainly a cause of eating disorders, media and society still has a predominant impact on eating disorders. Family issues and environmental factors can be the cause of eating disorders, while media can influence and initially start eating disorders. Social media website such as Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr can encourage eating disorders and give off the image that “thinness” is a societal norm. Media focuses on the image of women, and can make false accusations about health. For example, media blasts models who are stick thin and encourage people’s desire to diet and the belief that thinness leads to happiness. The models always have a contagious smile on their face, giving off the perception that being skinny and beautiful is a key to being happy. Our culture values media more than it ever has in the past, and is extremely popular amongst young women. In today’s society, models from Victoria Secret or other businesses can influence many young girls and women to think that being thin is a necessity. Eating disorders are exceedingly common in society. Media, social media, society, and pop culture all contribute to the rise of eating disorders. The negativity from social media has prescribed witless rule that society has obtained the belief that women must be thin to be deemed “beautiful” or “accepted” by society. Young girls are put in the position of distorted body image since toddler ages. Barbie dolls have impaired several young girl’s self-esteem and perception on beauty. Barbie depicts a pessimistic image on the expectation of beauty and happiness in women. Social media and social networking websites have also developed a negative influence on people who have eating disorders. On the internet, there are an assorted number of websites and blogs that enforce, encourage, and display how to have eating disorders. These websites contain pictures of women who are harshly underweight, various exercise routines, fasting routines, food schedules, and general advice on how to be anorexic or bulimic. Websites like this force and influence individuals, and can lead to prolonged exercise routines, bad and stark eating habits, and eventually eating disorders.
