In 2010 a freshman named phoebe prince committed suicide. The events leading up to her death included a lot of bullying over the internet- facebook to be specific. She was taunted for months by fellow classmates, encouraging her to kill herself. One day Prince decided that she had reached a low point and hung herself. After her death a classmate commented on the post “accomplished”. The police dug a little deeper and found the bullying campaign against Phoebe Prince. At least 6 parties were involved, before their arrest and after her death, they continued to taunt Prince. Rob Douglas, an identity theft expert stated, “Approximately 15 million United States residents have their identities used fraudulently each year with financial losses totalling upwards of $50 billion.” That’s a lot of people and a lot of money. I personally was almost scammed trying to get a puppy from craigslist. They sent papers and made it seem so real, but they wanted a western union as payment red flag right there. Stolen information goes missing without notice, just like an earring you wore to bed. Basic information to start a Facebook account is vital information to an identity theft. The main pieces of information they need are Names, birthdate, and hometown. You can find that information plastered all over the internet. People have gotten too comfortable with the “easy” life internet life. Fifteen million is huge, most people don’t see it coming. After the preditor rapes/ molest it’s victim it is not uncommon for murder to come along with it. Philip Markoff would contact people on craigslist requesting to meet for one thing or another. Innocent as that seems he is also known as the craigslist killer. It’s easy to trust a nice guy or gal over the internet but who are they really? There is no way to know, but people do it every day. Humans have become ignorant to the dangers of the world.

Teenagers are finding it difficult to escape or remove themselves from such public harassment, and in response, suicide is increasingly the outcome with many adolescents gravitating toward suicide pacts as well. Unfortunately, technology is not always a beautiful advance, ultimate luxury or everyday convenience. Technology has indeed aided and contributed to the demise of many. It will be of no miraculous wonder should this next decade see a dramatic swing in the cause of teenage suicide from depression and drugs to bullying. On the last day of her life, Jan. 14, 2010, some of her tormentors drove by in a car, called her an Irish slut, and suggested that she go kill herself. She did.” (Huus). Phoebe Prince was an ordinary High School teenager who wanted nothing more than to fit in and live a normal teenage life, but because of harassment and embarrassment her life was cut short. Instead of focusing on how to prevent this type of bullying, people are focusing on how to punish the bully and deal with the incident after it happens. The internet is a fairly new thing, and it is not going away anytime soon; therefore, students need to be educated on cyberbullying and somehow shown how it can impact their life or someone else’s. How severe the punishments should be for each student is always controversial. When witnesses get involved, a digital pile-on occurs. In this situation, the person who posts something is soliciting the involvement of other users who may not even know the target. The other users that get involved will also be at fault for agreeing and encouraging the bully to continue to distress the victim.
